In a bid to reach scale and with it reap the benefits that network effects bring, Tradeshift, the free e-invoicing and business interactions platform, has partnered with Intuit, along with taking a strategic investment from the legacy accounting software maker. The amount isn?t being disclosed ? said only to be ?multi-million? and at an increased valuation than Tradeshift?s most recent funding round.
The deal will also see Tradeshift?s platform integrated with Intuit?s QuickBooks, giving it access to a 5 million-strong customer base and potentially expanding Tradeshift?s current numbers well beyond the 150,000 SMBs it stands at today ? creating what it says will be ?one of the largest networks of connected suppliers?.
The use of the word network is significant, an e-invoicing and broader business B2B trading platform is only as useful as its ubiquity and/or standards support, thus removing the friction of doing business electronically. To that end, if Intuit?s customers can be brought on board, it?s a big win for the SMBs that already use Tradeshift as well as the company itself.
Writing on the company blog, CEO and co-founder, Christian Lanng, giddily sums it up best:
Why does this matter? Scale. The value of any communications network increases directly in proportion to number of users ? and when it reaches a point where it includes most of the businesses you want to interact with, something amazing happens. Skype, Facebook, Linkedin; all these platforms are successful because they have critical mass.
Specifically, today?s partnership will see Intuit?s accounting and payments products integrated with Tradeshift?s electronic trading network so that it will be easier for SMBs using QuickBooks to comply with their enterprise customers? e-invoicing mandates. Likewise, says Tradeshift, large enterprises should find that more of their suppliers will be willing to use e-invoicing etc. via the platform due to ?the reduced cost and friction enabled by the planned integrations?. You get the idea.
QuickBooks customers in the UK are said to be the first to benefit via a free app that connects their Tradeshift and QuickBooks accounts. A platform play in the proper sense, Tradeshift is also talking up what today?s announcement does for app developers who?ll also benefit from increased scale.
Note:?An earlier draft press release that has since been retracted pegged Intuit?s investment at $10 million.?Tradeshift are keen to stress that the figure is ?an old number and factually not accurate.?
Tradeshift is the fastest growing, global business network designed to help companies, large and small, transact, communicate and conduct business electronically and efficiently. The vision of Tradeshift is quite simple: Connect every business on the globe in a single network to help all companies interact more easily, securely and efficiently by taking their commercial relationships online. Tradeshift is used by over 120,000 businesses in 190 countries. At the enterprise level Tradeshift provides a unique and powerful platform to connect corporations with...

Sean Payton is back as the Saints? head coach, and his first act is to fire his defensive coordinator and reshape his defense.
The Saints have announced that Payton fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and secondary coach Ken Flajole, and that Payton wants to shift to a 3-4 defense.
?I personally want to thank Steve and Ken for their contributions during what was an unprecedented 2012 season,? Payton said in a statement released by the team. ?Philosophically we are changing our defense to a 3-4 alignment and right now is the best time to accomplish this transition.?
Spagnuolo replaced Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator a year ago, after Williams left for St. Louis ? and before the news broke that the Saints had previously run a bounty program that would result in Payton being suspended for 2012 and Williams being banned indefinitely. Now Payton is back and Spagnuolo is out.

CARSON, Calif. -- When Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o ordered two dozen white roses delivered to 21503 Water Street, he says he thought they were headed to the home of his dead girlfriend, Lennay Kekua. In fact, the man implicated as the ringleader of a false-identity hoax and many of his relatives have lived in the single-story, stucco bungalow, according to publicly available records and interviews with neighbors.
Water Street, in a working-class community 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, adds another element to the Te'o-Lennay Kekua hoax: the house six doors down, at 21403 Water, belongs to a family named Kekua ? an uncommon Hawaiian name but the same one as the fictitious girlfriend at the center of the ruse.
Two members of the real Kekua family told The Associated Press they had never heard of a "Lennay Kekua."
The Kekua fabrication came to light Wednesday, when Deadspin.com revealed that the story of Te'o's girlfriend dying from leukemia last September was a fake ? because Lennay Kekua never existed.
Deadspin suggested Ronaiah Tuiasosopo was the person responsible for carrying out the hoax. Te'o said Friday he had been contacted by the 22-year-old Tuiasosopo, and that the man had admitted to masterminding the scam. Members of the Kekua family and others in the neighborhood told the AP on Saturday that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo had lived at 21503 Water St. and has visited it since moving out about a year ago.
The AP reviewed a compilation of documents about the property from a variety of sources, such as real estate and bankruptcy records.
In specifying where he had sent the roses, Te'o said Friday in an interview with ESPN that he still didn't know who lives at 21503 Water Street or of any possible connection between the address and the hoax.
But he did say he knew the residents had accepted delivery of the bouquet. "They sent me a picture of the roses, of them getting it," he said. And they also sent a photo of the flowers that Te'o's parents had delivered "as proof" that their tribute to the nonexistent girlfriend had been received.
Publicly available records indicate that Tuiasosopo used to live at 21503 Water Street. One neighbor said Saturday that Ronaiah had lived in the house for several years, until about a year ago. Another neighbor said that in her 27 years living on the block there had always been a Tuiasosopo living in 21503, including Ronaiah, his father and an uncle, Navy.
Multiple public records indicate that Navy, who played football for Utah State and the Los Angeles Rams, was a brother of former USC football player Titus Tuiasosopo, Ronaiah's father. A neighbor said Navy had lived at 21503 until his death in 2011.
A Cadillac still registered to Navy Tuiasosopo was parked in the driveway of Titus Tuiasosopo's home in Palmdale, about 90 miles north of Carson, on Saturday. Titus is the pastor of Oasis Christian Church of the Antelope Valley in Lancaster, Calif., and Ronaiah is active in the church band, and most recently has been living with his father.
In a joint interview Saturday, Barbara Kekua, 78, said she has lived at 21403 Water Street since it was built about 50 years ago. Her daughter, Kris Kekua, 45, grew up there, and moved back two years ago, across the street to 21406 Water, to be near her mother.
The two Kekua women said they do not know why their name was chosen for the scheme.
Kris recalled that when the story of Lennay Kekua's supposed death made national sports headlines last fall, friends asked if she was related. "I'm like, `I don't know who that is,'" she said.
Kris said she had grown up with Titus and Navy on the block.

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) told an audience this week that former colleague Todd Akin was ?partly right? when he claimed women?s resist pregnancy from ?legitimate rape.? Gingrey has something else in common with Akin ? both used to serve on the House Committee on Science.
The House Science Committee is no sanctuary from scientifically dubious, non-empirical, ?truthy? policy positions. Republican committee members have in recent years created an array of controversies over reproduction, climate change, and evolution.
In Gingrey?s case, he sat on the Science Committee earlier in his career, and at one time was the ranking member on the Science Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation. An OB/GYN, Gingrey is also the current chair of the GOP Doctor?s caucus. Here?s what he said Thursday about rape, pregnancy and Akin, according to the Marietta Daily Journal:
I?ve delivered lots of babies, and I know about these things. It is true. We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ?Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don?t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.? So he was partially right wasn?t he?
For his part, Akin is no longer in Congress, having abandoned his seat to run for Senate against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) last year, but he held a seat on the Science Committee until the day he left. After holding a dominant lead in the polls, Akin?s campaign collapsed after he told a reporter that he opposed abortion for rape victims in part because ?if it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.?
As critics pointed out, a 1996 study published in the American Journal of Obstetricians and Gynecologists concluded that rape resulted in about 32,000 pregnancies a year. Even Gingrey said Akin didn?t have it exactly right: ?[T]he fact that a woman may have already ovulated 12 hours before she is raped, you?re not going to prevent a pregnancy there by a woman?s body shutting anything down because the horse has already left the barn, so to speak,? Gingrey explained.
Akin wasn?t the only sitting committee member to delve into pseudo-science last year. Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) declared a holy war against anyone who doubted whether man and tyrannosaurus lived side by side.
?All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell,? Broun said at a banquet for a church sporting club. ?And it?s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.?
Broun, who added that ?I don?t believe that the Earth?s but about 9,000 years old,? will remain on the science committee in the 113th Congress.
Nor is it just the rank and file members who have drawn attention with their pronouncements. The outgoing committee chair, Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX), has suggested that climate change is the product of a mass global conspiracy of scientists ? the overwhelming majority of whom have concluded that burning fossil fuels cause warming ? to obtain grant money. In 2011, he told National Journal he didn?t believe climate change was man-made because ?I don?t think we can control what God controls.?
?I?m really more fearful of freezing,? Hall said. ?And I don?t have any science to prove that. But we have a lot of science that tells us [climate scientists are] not basing it on real scientific facts.?
That puts him only slightly farther out from incoming chair Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), who chastised the ?lap dog? media in 2009 for not questioning the scientific consensus on climate change enough.
Smith?s vice chairman this year, Rep. James Sensebrenner (R-WI), decried climate change theory as a ?massive international scientific fraud? and evidence of what he called ?scientific fascism.? Another climate skeptic on the committee this year, Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), suggested in a hearing that ?dinosaur flatulence? might explain historic warming patterns.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) ? The Sudanese army says its soldiers have killed at least 30 rebels in clashes in Sudan's troubled North Darfur region.
The army spokesman, Col. Sawarme Khalid, says the rebel forces belong to Justice and Equality Movement. He told the semiofficial Sudan Media Center Wednesday that the army turned back a rebel attack in Jebel Marra area of North Darfur.
Darfur has been in turmoil since 2003, when ethnic Africans rebelled, accusing the Arab-dominated Sudanese government of discrimination. Rights groups charge the regime retaliated by unleashing Arab militias on civilians, a claim the government denies.
The U.N. estimates 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been displaced in the conflict.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has been indicted on war crimes charges by the International Criminal Court over Darfur.

Your comment is the only one that's not a joke, shame.
I wonder if this technique could be used with mosquitoes to find people. I.e. remember them verifying Bin Laden's location using DNA collected from a fake inoculation campaign
if not yet, it probably won't be long.
The taxonomists (and botanists, zoologists etc) have only recently been able to discover new species by sequencing the DNA. Previously, it took laborious searching and comparison of samples -- especially difficult with insects -- and that's not so accurate. Now, you can lay out some sticky paper and feed whatever sticks through a machine.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With President Hugo Chavez possibly in his last days, the United States sees the possibility of a long-sought reset in relations with Venezuela.
Chavez recently underwent his fourth cancer-related surgery in Cuba and there is wide speculation that the 58-year-old ? at the very least ? will never again be able to govern. His allies have postponed his inauguration for a new presidential term, originally scheduled for Thursday, prompting a fierce battle with the Venezuelan opposition, which argues such a delay is unconstitutional.
The Obama administration is steering clear of the legal debate. But it is nevertheless looking to the likely end of Chavez's 14-year rule, during which he championed a Latin America free of American influence and built alliances with U.S. foes across the globe such as Iran and Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, destroying anti-drug and counterterrorism ties with Washington along the way.
"Regardless of what happens politically in Venezuela, if the Venezuelan government and if the Venezuelan people want to move forward with us, we think there is a path that's possible," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Wednesday.
"It is just going to take two to tango," Nuland told reporters. "It's going to take action on the Venezuelan side as well as our willingness in order to improve relations."
Chavez hasn't spoken publicly in a month and while American officials don't know his exact condition, they believe he may be near death or a state of incapacity. Venezuela's government has kept Chavez's health a closely guarded secret.
If either scenario plays out, there is little to suggest Chavez's followers would seek to roll back his idiosyncratic ? and often anti-American ? vision of a Bolivarian socialist revolution. Still, the Obama administration is stepping up its outreach to the country's next likely leaders, convinced it can find some areas of future cooperation with the firebrand populist out of the way.
Roberta Jacobson, the top American diplomat for Latin America, spoke by telephone with Vice President Nicolas Maduro in November and discussed ways of improving ties on such issues as fighting drug cartels to terrorism. Chavez hand-picked Maduro to run for president if he is unable any longer to govern.
U.S. diplomat Kevin Whitaker also has been in regular contact with Roy Chaderton, Venezuela's ambassador to the Organization of American States in Washington.
Washington's goal is a pragmatic relationship with Chavez's successors, even as the two countries will likely have much to continue disagreeing over.
The approach is somewhat akin to the one President Barack Obama adopted with Russia after taking office four years ago, hoping to eliminate the distrust that built up during George W. Bush's presidency by re-establishing cooperation on issues such as Afghanistan and nuclear non-proliferation, while acknowledging that Moscow and Washington won't necessarily agree on democracy and the rule of law. The "reset" in ties with the Kremlin has stalled amid sharp U.S.-Russian disputes over missile defense plans and Syria's civil war, but the administration still fiercely defends its merits.
With Venezuela, the U.S. is hoping to start with stronger counter-narcotics coordination, a challenge given that the Venezuelan government includes officials subject to U.S. drug "kingpin" sanctions. Other American priorities include energy cooperation and stronger enforcement of sanctions against Iran. The U.S. also fears Iranian efforts to use Venezuela as a base for terrorist or other activity in the Western Hemisphere against American interests.
Maduro and other insiders in Chavez's government also seek rapprochement, but want to start with the first exchange of ambassadors between the two countries since 2010. The U.S. Embassy in Caracas has been without a top envoy since Chavez rejected Obama's nominee and accused him of making disrespectful remarks about Venezuela's government. That led Washington to revoke the visa of Venezuela's ambassador.
Speaking last week, Maduro stressed that the U.S. and Venezuela have "great ideological and political differences." But he held out the possibility of normalized relations based on mutual respect.
Despite Chavez's tirades against the U.S. and what he sees as its attempts to bring down his government, and U.S. criticism of Venezuela's lax efforts against drug traffickers, the two countries have maintained economic relations. The U.S. gets about 10 percent of its oil from Venezuela and remains the Latin American country's top purchaser.

You can't fault Sony for trying. After announcing its renewed focus on mobile back in 2012, the company's consistently issued thoughtful hardware for the global marketplace. But its collective efforts have yet to spark the "emotional" storm company CEO Kaz Hirai seems to be striving for. Well, if the smiles on our faces are any indication, Sony may have a bonafide hit on its hands with the Xperia ZL. Introduced officially at its CES 2013 event, the 5-inch Android Jelly Bean handset bears nigh identical specs to its larger, more "premium" big brother: the Xperia Z. With a scratch-resistant 1080p TFT Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro and 13-megapixel rear camera with Exmor RS sensor, the ZL sits comfortably in the high-end range. We spent a bit of time exploring the device and gauging its ability to evoke kando -- that Japanese term for an emotional reaction spurred by quality experiences -- so join us after the break to see how it fares and meter our level of excitement.

Jan. 3, 2013 ? Scientists are putting a new spin on their approach to generating electrical current by harnessing a recently identified electromotive force known as spinmotive force, which is related to the field of spintronics that addresses such challenges as improving data storage in computers. Now, a novel application of spintronics is the highly efficient and direct conversion of magnetic energy to electric voltage by using magnetic nanostructures and manipulating the dynamics of magnetization.
According to a report published in the American Institute of Physics' (AIP) journal Applied Physics Letters, this conversion could be the foundation for future development of spin-based power electronics, a field the authors call "power spintronics." Their newly published results of an experimental model suggest that a power spintronics-based device may one day be a promising approach to obtaining alternating current (AC) voltages from direct current (DC) magnetic fields.
The researchers demonstrated for the first time the feasibility of a device that generates a voltage based on manipulating an effective magnetic field within a nanowire that arises from width modulation. Technically such a field is not a true magnetic field, but it can be viewed as such. The team tested a one-dimensional model. It showed that DC magnetic field characteristics such as magnitude, and design parameters such as wire width, can be used to control, or "tune," the frequency and amplitude of AC current. Importantly, their results showed that a variable frequency ranging from megahertz to gigahertz can be achieved. Control and range in tuning ability are highly desirable management features in generating current.
The team's results suggest that applying their spintronics approach may one day meet a variety of commercial energy demands due to control and scalability.

Germany is launching a huge health survey to produce evidence-based information about the effects of diet, lifestyle and other factors such as smoking or alcohol on the big killers - cancer, heart disease, strokes and diabetes.
The 200,000 people will be asked to answer detailed questionnaires about what they eat, drink and whether they smoke, as well as how much exercise they take, as well as other areas such as their work, their mental and emotional states and physical health history.
The questionnaires will be sent out for answers regularly, while the physical examination will be repeated after four years so that any changes can be recorded.
"We want to better understand how illnesses develop and how one can prevent them," Rudolf Kaaks, head of the epidemiology of cancer department at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, told Wednesday's Die Welt newspaper.
"There have been debates for years - should one eat less red meat, or is it important to do move more, eat lots of fruit and vegetables, and so on. What remains open is which of these factors are the most important?"
He is also a board member of the National Cohort Association, which has as its basic aim the improved understanding of common chronic diseases. More than two-thirds of all deaths in Germany are attributable to cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke or diabetes-related complications, the group says on its website.
As well as lifestyle and straight-forward physical factors, the huge study will also include geographical and socio-economic information as possible factors in poor health. The idea is to develop risk assessment models to identify people at greater risk of chronic disease and help create effective methods of disease prevention.
More than ?210 million has been earmarked for the project which will be conducted by 18 medical centres across the country.

How would you like it if one of your favorite websites were hacked and rigged to infect you with malware??
That's what seems to have happened to the website of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR), a New York-based bipartisan think tank with a long list of illustrious members.?
The CFR's website was infected around Dec. 21 with a Trojan that exploited a previously unknown, or zero-day, flaw in older versions of Internet Explorer, setting up visitors using IE for a?drive-by download infection.?
"The vulnerability is a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in the way that Internet Explorer accesses an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated," Microsoft said in a?security advisory?posted Saturday. "The vulnerability may corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user within Internet Explorer."?
The malware affects Internet Explorer versions 6 through 8. Internet Explorer 9 and 10 are not affected, meaning users of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 can upgrade to those browsers to avoid infection.?
Microsoft is working on a fix, but in the meantime?recommends?that Windows users who cannot upgrade to newer versions of Internet Explorer set their Internet and intranet security-zone settings to "High," to set up alerts before running Active Scripting and to install the free?Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. [Update: Microsoft has?posted a "fix-it,"?a script that temporarily fixes the problem while the company continues to work on a full patch.]?
Chinese connection??
The CFR website compromise was first reported by the?Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news blog that quoted anonymous sources as saying the attack seemed to originate in China.?
FireEye, a Milpitas, Calif.-based information-security company, confirmed the CFR website was hosting malicious code in the form of a rigged Adobe Flash file.?
In its blog posting,?FireEye noted?that the code associated with the malware also restricted its victims to only systems using English, Russian, Chinese, Korean or Japanese, and that some internal code used simplified Chinese characters, as used on the Chinese mainland.?
Chinese state-sponsored hackers have been suspected in dozens of major information-stealing network attacks on Western governments, corporations and organizations over the past half decade.?
Such attacks are often politely termed "advanced persistent threats," and while most of the evidence points to China, few of the suspicions have been proven.?
American bigwig jackpot
Because the CFR is so prestigious and influential, experts characterized its website's hijacking as a?"watering-hole" attack.?
Watering-hole attacks are similar to?spear-phishing attacks?in that they target computers belonging to a specific person or a small group of people, but using Web browsers instead of email clients as the infection mechanism.?
In the case of the CFR, dozens of its prominent members would be ripe targets for state-sponsored information thieves. Former Treasury Secretary and Goldman Sachs head Robert Rubin co-chairs the board of directors, while former U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell sit on the board, as do journalists Tom Brokaw and Fareed Zakaria.?
Former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger, George Shultz and James Baker are reportedly lifetime members, as are current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as well as Hillary Clinton's possible replacement Sen. John Kerry.?
Other lifetime members are said to include Fox News Channel head Roger Ailes, his boss Rupert Murdoch, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Vice President Joe Biden, former vice presidents Dick Cheney and Walter Mondale and former presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) ? Maria Sharapova withdrew from the Brisbane International on Tuesday because of an injured right collarbone that left her unable to serve. She said she didn't want to aggravate the injury with the Australian Open two weeks away.
Also out was 2011 champion Petra Kvitova, who lost 6-4, 7-5 to Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a season-opening tournament that has proved rough for many of the top players.
Serena Williams, however, had no such problems. She carried her relentless winning form into 2013, reaching the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at night over No. 44-ranked Alize Cornet.
Williams, a 15-time major winner who is ranked No. 3, has lost only one of her last 34 competitive singles matches in a run that includes titles at Wimbledon, the London Olympics and the U.S. Open.
She was hitting winners so fiercely that Cornet didn't bother chasing most of them. One of her serves, in the fourth game of the second, was 124 mph (200 kilometers). That was faster than any of her serves last year, and she has rarely served faster anywhere.
"I just really went for it. I've hit 200 before but they never go in so I was really excited that it went in," Williams said. "I tried to be more aggressive."
Sharapova, ranked No. 2 and the French Open champion, didn't want to risk worsening a collarbone problem that flared late last month and also forced her from an exhibition in South Korea. She started hitting overheads and serves only on Monday and said it was wiser to head to Melbourne to get ready for the year's first Grand Slam tournament, which begins Jan. 14.
"I still have quite a bit of time to prepare for Australia. I'm on the right track, been training really well, so I just don't want to jeopardize what I've gained in the offseason so far," she said. "Just have to make a smart move here."
Kvitova, who won the Brisbane title five months before claiming her first Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon in 2011, didn't find any rhythm against Pavlyuchenkova. She will head to Sydney for more matches before the Australian Open.
Combined with Daniela Hantuchova's 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 5 Sara Errani and the first-round exits of No. 7 Sam Stosur and No. 8 Caroline Wozniacki, the season-opening event featuring eight of the top 10 ranked women had already lost five of its top eight seeds before the end of the second round.
"This tournament was a really tough draw, everybody's playing," Kvitova said. "After the offseason, it's hard to be on the court against some opponents."
Williams will next meet the winner of Wednesday's match between fellow American Sloane Stephens and Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson.
She said she had a touch of insomnia after arriving in Australia, and was awake listening to the New Year's Eve fireworks on Monday but not able to join the celebrations.
Now she's hoping for a night quarterfinal.
"I don't know what time zone I'm in. I don't know if I'm in Florida or if I'm in Mauritius or if I'm in Brazil. I just don't know anymore," she said, but "I'm good when I'm awake."
If she continues her dominating run right through the Australian Open, the 31-year-old Williams has a good chance of becoming the oldest player to be ranked No. 1. Chris Evert holds that record ? she was 30 years, 11 months when she last held the top ranking in 1985. She attributes her resurgence since her first-round exit at the last French Open to a feeling of invigoration.
"I just feel alive," she said. "I feel really alive."
On the men's side, local qualifier John Millman, ranked No. 199, advanced to a second-round match with Olympic and U.S. Open champion Andy Murray by beating Japan's Tatsuma Ito 6-4, 6-1.
Seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria downed Denis Kudla of the U.S. 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, while eighth-seeded Martin Klizan of Slovakia lost 6-1, 6-2 to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
Spain's Tommy Robredo advanced 6-4, 7-6 (4) over American Ryan Harrison, and Alejandro Falla of Colombia set up a second-round match with third-seeded Gilles Simon with a 6-1, 7-6 (8) win over Jesse Levine.
