I Can't Believe This Alien Orange Bubble Sky Actually Happened on Earth

The sky is blue! Only when it's not gray. Or purple. Or red. Or orange. The clouds are white! Only when they're not gray. Or even darker than that. Basically, the clouds and sky can be anything. But can the sky be a creamsicle orange bubbly thing that looks like we're on an alien planet? Apparently so.

Official: 2014 Ford F-150 gets CNG option

Ford F-150 to Offer Ability to Run on Compressed Natural Gas; Sales of Ford CNG-Prepped Vehicles Continue Growth

- 2014 Ford F-150 will offer a gaseous-fuel prep option on the 3.7-liter V6 engine; it will be able to run on compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas

- With the addition of F-150, Ford will have eight vehicles available to run on clean-burning, inexpensive CNG/LPG. Sales continue to grow rapidly, with Ford expecting to sell more than 15,000 CNG/LPG-prepped vehicles this year

- Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifiers offer a wide variety of CNG options to help customers find the best, most cost-effective solution to their diverse operating needs

DEARBORN, Mich., July 31, 2013 ? Ford, America's truck leader, will offer the 2014 F-150 with the ability to run on compressed natural gas, making Ford the only manufacturer with an available CNG/LPG-capable half-ton pickup.

The 2014 Ford F-150 with 3.7-liter V6 engine will be available this fall with a factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package that includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings so it can operate on either natural gas or gasoline through separate fuel systems.

When the 3.7-liter V6 F-150 is equipped with a CNG/LPG engine package, it is capable of achieving more than 750 miles on one tank of gas, depending on the tank size selected. The Ford F-150 averages 23 mpg on the highway.

"Businesses and fleet customers have been asking Ford to make F-150 available with CNG capability to take advantage of the fuel's low price and clean emissions," said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. "With the money saved using CNG, customers could start to see payback on their investment in as little as 24 to 36 months."

CNG/LPG engine prep from the factory costs approximately $315 before the customer chooses a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors. Upfits run approximately $7,500 to $9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity.

CNG conversions can provide stability against fluctuating fuel prices as well as lower vehicle operating costs for fleet administrators. CNG sells for an average of $2.11 per gallon of gasoline equivalent, and is as low as $1 in some parts of the country, representing a significant savings over unleaded regular fuel. The national average for unleaded regular fuel is $3.66 per gallon.

In the next year, Ford will offer eight commercial vehicles with a gaseous-prep option, a number no other full-line manufacturer can match:

- Transit Connect van and wagon
- Transit van, wagon, cutaway and chassis cab
- E-Series van, wagon, cutaway and stripped chassis
- F-Series Super Duty pickup and F-350 chassis cab
- F-Series Super Duty chassis cab (F-450, F-550)
- F-650 medium-duty truck
- F53 and F59 stripped chassis
- 2014 F-150 light-duty pickup

Customers are enthusiastically responding to this powerful array of choices. Since reintroducing the option in 2009, Ford has established itself as the leader in CNG/LPG engine sales. Ford is on pace to sell more than 15,000 CNG/LPG-prepped vehicles this year, an increase of more than 25 percent from 2012.

AT&T is one of many Ford customers that are finding value in CNG. The communications giant recently purchased 650 F-350 chassis cabs with the CNG-prep option.

"We're almost halfway to our company-wide goal of deploying 15,000 alternative-fuel vehicles by the end of year 2018," said Jerome Webber, AT&T vice president, global fleet operations. "Vehicles such as CNG F-350s from Ford have helped us avoid purchasing 7.7 million gallons of gasoline over the past five years while reducing our fleet's emissions."

Qualified Vehicle Modifiers
Ford has established a rigorous qualification program for alternative-fuel vehicle modifiers. The QVM program is intended to help modifiers achieve greater levels of customer satisfaction and product acceptance through the manufacture of high-quality vehicles.

QVMs offer a wide variety of CNG/LPG options to help customers find the best, most cost-effective solution to their diverse operating needs. Ford maintains the engine and powertrain limited warranty (five years or 60,000 miles); the modifier is responsible for the system component warranty.

Compressed natural gas
Compressed natural gas is mainly composed of methane. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of approximately 3,600 psi. About 85 percent of the CNG used in the United States is produced domestically.

Another benefit of this alternative fuel: Cleaner emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certifies CNG usage can result in up to 30 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.

Will or Living Trust: What's the Difference? - Law and Daily Life

Do you need a will or a living trust? What's the difference, anyway?

Chances are you have some assets, whether they be big ones like houses in your name, or small ones like that $20 bill in your wallet. Either way, most of us would like to have control over our belongings and the ultimate say in who gets them (and perhaps even how they're used) once we're gone.

Living trusts and wills are two very common documents that people will choose to draft when it comes to estate planning. Here's a general overview of how they're different:

Major Differences

As you probably know, a will is a document that describes one's preference about how one's estate should be distributed upon death.

So what's a living trust? For starters, a trust in general is a fiduciary relationship in which one person (the grantor or trustor) entrusts his assets with another person (the grantee or trustee). The trustee (who can be the same person as the grantor) then has the responsibility of transferring title of the assets to the trust's beneficiaries.

A living trust is simply a way to transfer assets to the trust during the trust creator's lifetime.

One huge difference between a living trust and a will is that a will must go through probate, while a living trust doesn't. Probate is the process that transfers property upon a person's death. Typically, it requires a court to get involved and to hear arguments from those who may contest the will. With a living trust, however, this often stressful process is avoided, because assets are technically transferred to the trust before the grantor's death.

Which Should You Pick?

When deciding whether to draft a will or a living trust, one factor to consider is whether you want your assets to be doled out after you die or during your lifetime. Wills only apply upon one's death, whereas living trusts only apply during one's lifetime.

Not everyone needs a living trust, but they can be useful for those with minor children who want their kids to receive certain assets upon reaching adulthood. Also, they are a good way to organize your assets if you have a particularly large, complicated estate.

Some people choose to have both a will and a living trust; others opt for one or the other. If you are without either, then courts will generally turn to your state's intestacy law by default, which may not necessarily pan out the way you hoped it would.

Need More Help?

Because each person's estate planning needs are different, it's wise to consult an experienced estate planning attorney near you to discuss your unique situation.

Another option is to take advantage of a prepaid legal plan like those offered by LegalStreet, which include an attorney-drafted will with annual updates. LegalStreet plans start at less than $13 a month, and also give you on-call access to local attorneys who can answer questions about a variety of legal issues.

Disclosure: LegalStreet and FindLaw.com are owned by the same company.

How to spot a female ex-Yankii in Japan

No, not a naturalised American woman, but a Yankii, to be polite, a juvenile delinquent, or to be more pointed, a chavette. goo Ranking indulged in a bit of stereotyping by asking people what behaviour from a woman would make you think she might be an ex-Yankii.

Demographics

Between the 31st of May and 3rd of June 2013 1,069 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.1% of the sample were female, 24.8% in their teens, 24.9% in their twenties, 25.0% in their thirties, and 25.4% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

London Mayor Warns of Energy Scarcity; an American Revolution Offers a Solution

Recently the Mayor of London wrote that within two years, energy scarcity will ?force some industries not to operate at peak times? in the city. His solution is to bring hydraulic fracturing to the country; he said, ?We should leave no stone unturned, or unfracked, in the cause of keeping the lights on.?

Britain, Europe?s largest consumer of natural gas, does possess abundant energy potential in the form of raw materials. Beneath the ground lies (among other things) the Bowland shale, which the British government estimates to hold decades of energy in the form of shale gas. The technology and expertise to develop this potential could be imported from North America.

However, unlike in the United States, where the shale gas that fueled the fracking revolution was largely on private land, where property rights were largely protected and businessmen were free to take risks and seek profits, the shale is Britain is on ?public? land controlled by the government, which is motivated not by profits but by politics. Bureaucrats who lack both the incentive and the talent to get oil from rocks will not get oil from rocks. And businessmen who are throttled by ?public? interests and political considerations will not get much oil from rocks either.

If the British want the kind of fruit that real and unshackled businessmen can reap from the Bowland shale or the like, they will have to convince their government to sell the property to the private sector, and to protect the rights of the private owners and the businessmen with whom they contract to develop it for profit.

The mayor of London has said ?We should leave no stone unturned, or unfracked, in the cause of keeping the lights on.? One stone the Brits must not leave unturned is the producer?s stone, under which they will find the unassailable primaries of private property rights and the profit motive. When it comes to fracking, these are king. Hence the American Energy Revolution.

NBC to air Hillary Clinton miniseries

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? A Hillary Rodham Clinton miniseries timed to precede the 2016 presidential election is part of NBC's effort to create "event" programming that will draw viewers to the shrinking world of broadcast network TV, NBC's programming chief said Saturday.

"We need to be in the event business. I think you're going to hear that from every broadcast network," said Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman.

The four-hour miniseries "Hillary," starring Diane Lane as the former first lady and secretary of state, is one such bid for distinctive programming, he said.

The goal is to woo viewers who are increasingly drawn away by cable TV's eye-catching, critically acclaimed fare like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" and other media choices.

Broadcasting's audience is shrinking by 4 percent to 7 percent annually, Greenblatt told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

"Anything that can shake up the landscape and say, 'we have something special'" would be considered part of the varied group of event projects, he said.

At NBC, that ranges from the new fall game show "Million Second Quiz" to big-ticket scripted fare including "Hillary" and other projects announced Saturday: "Rosemary's Baby" a four-hour version of the Ira Levin novel that was adapted as a 1968 movie; an adaptation of "Stephen King's Tommyknockers," and "Plymouth," about the Pilgrim's journey and settlement in America.

A six-hour miniseries about Cleopatra is in development, Greenblatt said.

Although Clinton hasn't announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination for president, Greenblatt spoke as if her candidacy is expected. "Hillary" could air before Clinton announces her decision, but the timing has yet to be determined, Greenblatt said.

He didn't address how such a miniseries, which will track Clinton's life and career from 1998 to the present, might affect the presidential contest.

The part of former President Bill Clinton has yet to be cast. Lane's credits include the feature films "Unfaithful" and "Under the Tuscan Sun" and the TV movie "Cinema Verite."

Other networks seeking to stem audience erosion are jumping on the event bandwagon, especially in light of the success of another King adaptation, CBS' summer series "Under the Dome." Announced plans include a Fox's remake of the "Shogun" miniseries based on James Clavell's novel.

Greenblatt argued that NBC, which finished the last September-to-May season in fourth place in total viewers, is in better shape when the entire year is taken into account, especially among advertiser-favored young adult viewers.

He credited the popular talent contests "The Voice" and "America's Got Talent," as well as dramas "Grimm" and "Hannibal."

NBC has high hopes for the fall sitcom that brings Michael J. Fox back to TV but is prepared for a big tune-in for the debut episode that might not be sustainable, Greenblatt said.

Identification of key neurons that sense unexpected motion has significant implications for motion sickness

It happens to all of us at least once each winter in Montreal. You're walking on the sidewalk and before you know it you are slipping on a patch of ice hidden under a dusting of snow. Sometimes you fall. Surprisingly often you manage to recover your balance and walk away unscathed. McGill researchers now understand what's going on in the brain when you manage to recover your balance in these situations. And it is not just a matter of good luck.

Prof. Kathleen Cullen and her PhD student Jess Brooks of the Dept of Physiology have been able to identify a distinct and surprisingly small cluster of cells deep within the brain that react within milliseconds to readjust our movements when something unexpected happens, whether it is slipping on ice or hitting a rock when skiing. What is astounding is that each individual neuron in this tiny region that is smaller than a pin's head displays the ability to predict and selectively respond to unexpected motion.

This finding both overturns current theories about how we learn to maintain our balance as we move through the world, and also has significant implications for understanding the neural basis of motion sickness.

Scientists have theorized for some time that we fine-tune our movements and maintain our balance, thanks to a neural library of expected motions that we gain through "sensory conflicts" and errors. "Sensory conflicts" occur when there is a mismatch between what we think will happen as we move through the world and the sometimes contradictory information that our senses provide to us about our movements.

This kind of "sensory conflict" may occur when our bodies detect motion that our eyes cannot see (such as during plane, ocean or car travel), or when our eyes perceive motion that our bodies cannot detect (such as during an IMAX film, when the camera swoops at high speed over the edge of steep cliffs and deep into gorges and valleys while our bodies remain sitting still). These "sensory conflicts" are also responsible for the feelings of vertigo and nausea that are associated with motion sickness.

But while the areas of the brain involved in estimating spatial orientation have been identified for some time, until now, no one has been able to either show that distinct neurons signaling "sensory conflicts" existed, nor demonstrate exactly how they work. "We've known for some time that the cerebellum is the part of the brain that takes in sensory information and then causes us to move or react in appropriate ways," says Prof. Cullen. "But what's really exciting is that for the first time we show very clearly how the cerebellum selectively encodes unexpected motion, to then send our body messages that help us maintain our balance. That it is such a very exact neural calculation is exciting and unexpected."

By demonstrating that these "sensory conflict" neurons both exist and function by making choices "on the fly" about which sensory information to respond to, Cullen and her team have made a significant advance in our understanding of how the brain works to keep our bodies in balance as we move about.

The research was done by recording brain activity in macaque monkeys who were engaged in performing specific tasks while at the same time being unexpectedly moved around by flight-simulator style equipment.

Boehner, GOP Renew Pledge to Overturn Obamacare

House Speaker John Boehner renewed his vow to abolish President Barack Obama?s health-care law after the Republican-controlled chamber voted to postpone two of the legislation?s key provisions.

?Obamacare is bad for America,? Boehner said in a taped interview for ?Face the Nation? on CBS that airs on Sunday, according to an excerpt released by the network.

?We?re going to do everything we can to make sure that it never happens,? the Ohio Republican said.

The House this week voted to delay by a year the enforcement of both the employer mandate and a centerpiece of the health law: the requirement that most Americans obtain health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine.

In Saturday's weekly GOP address, Reps. Tim Griffin and Todd Young urged Senate Democrats to allow a vote on legislation to protect all Americans from Obamacare mandates. Griffin, of Arkansas, and Young, of Indiana, spoke about the delays in the Obamacare plan and call for protective measures to be taken.

"As Americans, we want to see our children have the same opportunities we?ve had," said Griffin. "We want them to work hard and have a fair shot at achieving success. So whenever Washington helps businesses and ignores families and workers, Americans have a duty to speak up."

The Democratic Obama administration announced earlier this month that it would delay until 2015 a mandate that U.S. businesses with 50 or more workers provide their employees with health insurance.

?If Obamacare was workable, why did the president announce he wasn?t going to enforce the employer mandate?? Boehner asked in the CBS interview.

Young said the Obama administration's plans to delay the employer mandate in the healthcare law has left many hardworking taxpayers asking "what about me? What about my family?" when it comes to the looming mandate that all Americans obtain insurance.

"After all, the law's mandates are just as daunting for individuals ," said Young. "And they don?t have an army of lawyers, lobbyists and accountants at their disposal to make sense of it all. The government just put out an additional 145 pages of regulations on the individual mandate alone. How are ordinary citizens supposed to keep up?"

Griffin said Republicans understand how Obamacare is worrying the American public, and said that if the president is helping out businesses by exempting them from mandates, "he ought to give the same relief to folks like you."

Young, who sponsored the House "Fairness for American Families Act," which provides the same mandate relief to individuals as business enjoy, said many Democrats voted against the measure and to "stand with big business and against fairness for individuals and families."

Obama has also threatned a veto on the proposals, said Young, which Republicans are urging him to reconsider.

"We take that to mean he thinks it?s fair to let businesses off the hook while leaving middle-class families in harm?s way," said Young. "Well, it most certainly is not, and we urge him to reconsider his veto threat. We also call on Democratic leaders in the Senate to give our proposals a vote immediately in the name of fairness."

Griffin said the whole Obamacare plan "is a train wreck, plain and simple," and Young noted that "the sooner we can delay, dismantle, and repeal the president?s health care law, the sooner we can get people back to work and focus on expanding opportunity for everyone."

The Democratic-controlled Senate is unlikely to take up the House measures, which Senator Patty Murray of Washington called ?pointless pandering.?

Obama defended his health law at the White House on Thursday.

?Health-care costs have slowed drastically in some areas since we passed the Affordable Care Act,? he said. ?New competition, new choices, market forces are pushing costs down.?

Cost cuts help GE profit beat as order book swells

By Ernest Scheyder

(Reuters) - General Electric Co posted a decline in quarterly profit and revenue on Friday on weakness in its finance unit, but its order book rose, sending shares up 2.4 percent in early trading.

Overall profit beat expectations by a penny as the conglomerate cut costs and kept orders mostly steady for its turbines and other industrial machinery.

GE said its order book, an indicator of how much work it has received from customers, was up 4 percent globally and 20 percent in the United States, a jump that surprised investors.

"This is as close as GE comes to a positive surprise as possible," said Tim Ghriskey of Solaris Asset Management, which owns GE shares.

GE Capital's revenue fell 3 percent from the same period last year, and its earnings dropped 9 percent.

GE, the world's largest jet engine manufacturer, posted second-quarter net income of $3.69 billion, or 36 cents per share, for the second quarter, from $4.01 billion, or 38 cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts expected earnings of 35 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue fell 4 percent to $35.1 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $35.56 billion.

The stock was up 2.4 percent to $24.19 in premarket trading.

Large coronal hole near the sun's north pole

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Astronomers captured an image of a gigantic coronal hole hovering over the sun's north pole on July 18, 2013, at 9:06 a.m. EDT. Coronal holes are dark, low density regions of the sun's outermost atmosphere, the corona. They contain little solar material, have lower temperatures, and therefore, appear much darker than their surroundings.

Iran president highlights ties in final Iraq visit

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Outgoing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad paid a final official visit to Iraq on Thursday, seeking to emphasize the growing relations between the Shiite-led neighbors just weeks before he steps down from the job.

The Iranian leader is meeting with top Iraqi officials and visiting Shiite holy sites during his two-day visit to Iraq, which is grappling with its worst outbreak of violence in half a decade. Iraq is home to some of Shiite Islam's most sacred shrines and is a major destination for the sect's pilgrims.

Ahmadinejad is just weeks away from handing over power to president-elect Hasan Rouhani, who is expected to be sworn in in early August. That leaves little chance that his visit will lead to major shifts in relations between the countries or their stance toward the Syrian civil war raging across Iraq's western border.

In brief remarks following talks with Iraqi Vice President Khudier al-Khuzaie, Ahmadinejad emphasized Tehran's determination to strengthen ties further with Baghdad while linking his own country's success with that of Iraq.

"The prosperity, progress and security of Iraq are also Iran's prosperity, progress and security," Ahmadinejad said before later holding talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Ahmadinejad previously flew to Iraq in 2008, the first ever trip by an Iranian president since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution and the two countries' bloody war in the 1980s. He used that earlier visit to emphasize a new chapter in "brotherly" relations between the one-time foes and take swipes at the United States over the legacy of its 2003 military invasion.

It was a theme he touched on again Thursday.

"We are determined to make use of all available opportunities to develop brotherly relations," Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad was given a red-carpet greeting by al-Khuzaie upon arrival at the airport in Baghdad. The vice president is standing in for Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who suffered a stroke in December and has been absent from Iraq's political scene while he receives treatment in a German hospital.

Al-Khuzaie underscored Baghdad's interest in strengthening ties with Iran, saying Iraq "can be a bridge for good relations between the Islamic Republic and the Arab world." Many of the Mideast's Sunni-ruled Arab states are wary of Iran's intentions in the region.

Neither leader made any mention of Syria during a short press conference. They did not take any questions.

Iran is the main regional backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose troops are battling largely Sunni rebels who receive support from Sunni countries such as Turkey and the Gulf states.

Iraq is officially neutral in the conflict, and it has repeatedly called for a negotiated political solution to the Syrian crisis.

The U.S., however, has been pressuring Iraq for months to do more to stop Iranian flights suspected of carrying weapons to Syria from transiting its airspace. Iraqi officials have carried out some spot checks of Iranian planes and say they've found nothing, though they insist that they lack the capability to force Iranian aircraft to land.

Asked about the allegations of arms shipments, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told The Associated Press by telephone that "Syria does not need Iranian weapons." He did acknowledge that Iran occasionally sends humanitarian and medical supplies to Damascus.

Iraqi fighters meanwhile are traveling to fight in Syria. Shiite militants, some of which are believed to be backed by Iran, are fighting alongside regime forces, while Sunni fighters, many of them allied to Iraq's al-Qaida arm, have joined the rebellion.

The outgoing U.N. envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, warned this week that the spike in violence roiling Iraq can no longer be separated from the civil war in neighboring Syria because "the battlefields are merging." Attacks in Iraq have claimed more than 2,800 lives since the start of April.

Late Thursday, a bomb exploded near a Sunni mosque in Mahmoudiya, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad, killing three and wounding nine, police and hospital officials said.

Another roadside bomb exploded earlier in the day as an army patrol passed by near the town of Madain, 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of Baghdad, authorities said. That blast killed two soldiers and wounded four others, police and hospital officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to journalists.

Iranian state television reported that Ahmadinejad hopes the visit will boost economic cooperation between the two neighbors, which it says now amounts to $13 billion in annual trade. It said Iran aims to finalize a deal to ship 25 million cubic meters of Iranian gas daily to fuel Iraqi power plants, which are still incapable of provide a steady supply of electricity. A new gas pipeline from Iran is expected to open later this summer.

Iraq is a major market for Iranian goods, including cars, construction materials and food products such as tomato paste and ice cream. Those exports provide an important source of hard currency for Iran, which has been increasingly cut off from the world's financial system following multiple rounds of sanctions over its disputed nuclear program.

In a statement following his talks with Ahmadinejad, al-Maliki urged Iranian companies to continue to invest in Iraq's reconstruction, and voiced his appreciation for Iran's help in the electricity sector.

The U.S.-led invasion ten years ago that toppled Saddam Hussein's Sunni-heavy regime set in motion a rapid turnaround in relations between Iran and Iraq, which fought a ruinous eight-year war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Saddam's ouster put Iraq's majority Shiites in control, and many Shiites who had fled persecution by Saddam and took refuge in Iran returned home. Millions of Iranians now visit Shiite holy sites in Iraq annually, and top Iraqi leaders including al-Maliki have paid visits to Iran.

Still, many Iraqis remain suspicious of Iranian influence in their country. Sunni Arabs in particular resent the government's warm ties with Tehran and some criticize al-Maliki of being too close to the Islamic Republic.
