Small Business Advertising Mistakes | Advertising Jobs and Careers ...

When it comes to advertising, small businesses can choose from an assortment of different options. There are traditional options for advertising, which includes radio advertising, television advertising, and print advertising in local newspapers. However, there are more advanced advertising options, which includes mobile marketing and online advertisements, all of which can be done, even for those who are on a stricter budget. However, in order for a small business owner to make the most of their advertising campaign, they need to be sure to avoid the common problems that many business owners face when advertising.

The first problem that many business owners face is that they set budgets that are simply unrealistic. The amount of money put out for advertisement should never be ridiculously high if the money is not there. It should also not be too low because too little advertising can end up being a waste of money. Small business owners need to do the math to make sure that the budget they set for their business will not result in any losses from their advertising. And, setting too small of a budget, with just one advertisement in a local paper, will simply not generate the responses that the small business owners want and need to survive. A small campaign that lasts for at least 3 months will need to be set up.

Another problem is that many small business owners are not targeting the right audience. For the utmost success with an advertising campaign, it is important to target the right people, the people who are generally most likely to buy certain products from the business. Small business owners need to keep track of who regularly comes into their store and who buys what. Knowing specific characteristics of the majority of buyers will help a small business to target specific audiences when advertising. Surveys can be set up to help with the process of finding out which buyers would be more than likely to shop at the small business.

Small business owners have to be willing to track their progress and figure out where the leads are coming from so that they know which advertisements are working and which advertisements are not. This is important but unfortunately, too many small business owners completely forget about tracking the data from advertisements. When a customer calls the business or comes in, the first question that should be asked is something along the lines of, ?How did you hear about our business??

Last but certainly not least, small business owners have to come up with an advertising strategy. The owner needs to decide which type of advertising works best for the business and run with the opportunity. Creative and quality advertisements are a must because they are what will engage the audience, getting them interested in the business and what the small business has to offer to them.

Amazon founder locates Apollo 11 rockets

Jeff Bezos, the dot-com billionaire, announced that he has located the booster rockets that lifted the first moon mission into space at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. ?He hopes to raise one or both to the surface.

For more than four decades, the powerful engines that helped boost the Apollo 11 mission to the moon have rested in the Atlantic. Now Internet billionaire and space enthusiast Jeff Bezos wants to raise at least one of them to the surface.

An undersea expedition spearheaded by Bezos used sonar to find what he said were the F-1 engines located 14,000 feet deep. In an online announcement Wednesday, the Amazon.com CEO and founder said he is drawing up plans to recover the sunken engines, part of the mighty Saturn V rocket that launched Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on their moon mission.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

The five engines, which produced nearly 7.7 million pounds of thrust, dropped into the sea as planned minutes after liftoff in 1969. Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon.

"We don't know yet what condition these engines might be in," he wrote. "They hit the ocean at high velocity and have been in salt water for more than 40 years. On the other hand, they're made of tough stuff, so we'll see."

Bezos acknowledged the engines were the property of NASA, but said he hoped they will be displayed in museums.

NASA expressed excitement about the find. The space agency said it has not been formally contacted by Bezos and waited for more information.

"There has always been great interest in artifacts from the early days of space exploration and his announcement only adds to the enthusiasm of those interested in NASA's history," NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs said in a statement.

No timetable has been set for the recovery. When it happens, it'll undoubtedly take longer to hoist the 19-foot engines off the sea floor than the 2 1/2 minutes it took for them to power off the launch pad.

The sea floor is littered with spent rockets and flight parts from missions dating back to the dawn of the Space Age and it's unknown what survived decades later after crashing into the ocean.

In 2009, a private company salvaged Gus Grissom's Mercury capsule that accidentally sank in the Atlantic after splashdown in 1961. It was restored and displayed at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center.

Bezos' planned Apollo recovery is the latest deep-sea adventure by the wealthy. "Avatar" director James Cameron over the weekend rode a mini-sub to Earth's deepest spot in the western Pacific Ocean, seven miles below the surface, which he described as an alien world. Sir Richard Branson plans a similar dive to the deepest part of the Atlantic, the Puerto Rican trench, later this year.

Bezos was 5 years old when he watched the moon landing on television and became hooked on getting to space. NASA "sure inspired me, and with this endeavor, maybe we can inspire a few more youth to invent and explore," he wrote.

It was not immediately clear when Bezos' team spotted the Apollo engines. Bezos offered few details about the discovery and did not say how he knew the engines were from Apollo 11. The cost of the recovery was not disclosed, but Bezos said it will be done with private funds.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said Bezos was not available for comment.

Bezos' Blue Origin has been developing a vertical takeoff and landing rocketship that would fly passengers to suborbital space. It has NASA funding to compete to go into orbit as a space taxi now that the space shuttle fleet is retired.

Last year, a test flight went awry when the vehicle became unstable at 45,000 feet and crashed.

Analysis: Canada's "Cushing moment": A northern pipeline crisis looms

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Oil traders still grappling with an unprecedented pipeline bottleneck in the U.S. Midwest that roiled global energy markets last year should beware: Canada may be next.

The pipelines that carry crude from Alberta's oil sands and the Bakken shale fields of North Dakota to U.S. refiners may run out of capacity as soon as 2015, some analysts now warn.

Fears that the export of Canadian crude will be constrained have risen recently as a result of pipeline project delays and the unyielding growth of North Dakota output. Any resulting glut could weaken Canadian oil prices, depress profits for producers like Suncor Energy Inc and Cenovus Energy Inc and choke growth in the largest source of U.S. imports.

A crisis could be avoided, though. Major pipeline operators like Enbridge Inc say they're confident that an estimated 1 million barrels per day (bpd) of idle capacity on existing Canada-to-U.S. lines is more than enough for up to five years, sufficient time to complete new lines or add pumps.

That view is by no means unanimous.

"New capacity is needed by the 2014-2015 period or we're really going to be squeezed," said Steve Fekete, managing consultant at international oil consultancy Purvin & Gertz, which completed a major pipeline study last autumn.

"Tight oil out of North Dakota (is) rapidly increasing and could chew up capacity perhaps more quickly than our forecast," he said, referring to the crude oil prised from shale by injections of water and chemicals.

Call it a "Cushing moment" for Canada, the world's No. 6 oil producer -- a dire scenario in which surplus crude would start to pile up in the storage tanks of Hardisty, Alberta, like the glut that developed in the U.S. oil crossroads of Cushing, Oklahoma, a year ago.

The possibility of a Canadian choke-point has arisen because of two recent, unexpected developments: The U.S. rejection of the Keystone XL project, the biggest trans-national pipeline expansion; and the stunning growth of North Dakota's Bakken shale.

The government is also taking action. Canada is set to push forward new measures to cut approval times for major pipeline projects in order to speed the completion of proposed routes to the Pacific Ocean and refiners in Asia.

"At a certain point there will be an issue (with capacity)," Joe Oliver, Canada's natural resources minister, said in an interview this week. "We remain optimistic that pipelines can be built in time to avoid ... the kind of problem they have in Cushing."

WON'T BE FOOLED AGAIN?

Last year, the rapidly growing glut of crude trapped in the Midwest caught most of the industry unprepared, forcing traders and producers to use railways, barges and tank trunks to compensate for the lack of north-to-south pipelines. Most U.S. conduits were built to transport imported or Gulf Coast crude to the interior of the country, not the reverse.

Jitters over pipeline capacity are reflected in the cash market for spot Canadian crude. Earlier this month, the price for the synthetic crude created from oil sands bitumen tumbled after a car crash in Illinois shut down a major line south. Its discount to benchmark U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures was nearly doubled by the conduit's closure for nearly a week, which trapped volumes in Western Canada.

There's some indication that operators have taken note.

Enbridge is now looking at ways to ensure that a possible expansion of its network from North Dakota won't congest its main Canada-to-U.S. trunk line, says Vern Yu, vice-president of business development.

"We're going to make sure that where that crude ties into our system it doesn't create a choke point. That's what we're scoping out right now," he said in an interview. Details of the new Bakken project may be released in May, he added.

For the moment there is more than enough capacity in existing pipelines to compensate for most disruptions, even after a 20 percent rise in exports since 2010.

In all, Yu estimates that by using its latent capacity and reshaping what its pipelines carry, Enbridge could find space for an additional 1 million bpd of new production, more than enough to service an expanded 585,000 bpd Flanagan South project announced on Tuesday.

In 2011, Western Canada's oil production totaled around 2.6 million barrels per day, with 1.58 million bpd coming from the oil sands and the remainder from conventional sources -- still fitting comfortably within Canada's available export pipeline space of around 3.6 million bpd.

However by 2015, oil sands output is expected to rise to 2.2 million bpd and, including conventional crude, total will reach about 3.55 million bpd, according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP's) benchmark annual forecast issued last June.

"It's something we're watching very closely," said Greg Stringham, vice-president of markets at CAPP. "We see tightness coming in 2014 and 2015."

Canadian crude is only half the story.

Even if producers can get oil south of the border, booming output from North Dakota's shale oil fields is increasingly flowing into the same trunk lines from Canada. It must then travel another 500 miles south to major Midwest refineries, intensifying congestion along that narrow but crucial stretch.

A C$180 million ($182 million) Bakken expansion project will take 145,000 barrels per day of crude from North Dakota by 2013, pushing Enbridge's outbound capacity from the state to 350,000 barrels. A second such project is now being considered.

THREE LINES, THREE SOLUTIONS?

Canada now has three major pipelines taking conventional and oil sands crude into the Midwest. The largest is Enbridge Inc's mainline system, which carried nearly 1.55 million bpd last year, shy of its design limit of 2.5 million bpd. It runs as far east as Sarnia, Ontario, and south to Cushing.

About 300,000 or 400,000 bpd of the spare capacity can be accessed immediately, says Yu. But it could take as much as a year or two in order to reach maximum output, which would require the installation of additional pumps.

"Our expectation is that capacity will be needed, depending on supply growth, anywhere between 2015 and 2017," he added.

Two more pipelines that run from Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin, also offer additional space: the 450,000 Alberta Clipper pipeline, opened in 2010 and still running under capacity -- though Enbridge does not disclose its utilization rates -- and the 796,000 bpd Line 4, which now handles heavy oil from Alberta.

Yu says Enbridge could convert its 390,000 bpd Line 3 -- which now runs light and synthetic crude, as well as natural gas condensates and some light sour crudes -- to run heavy crude.

Other companies' lines are effectively maxed out, including TransCanada Corp's existing 591,000 Keystone oil line and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners' 280,000 bpd Express-Platte system into southern Illinois.

Until about a year ago, a squeeze seemed unlikely. After years of environmental reviews, TransCanada's $7 billion Keystone XL project seemed set to get approval to add as much as 830,000 barrels per day of new capacity by 2013.

But the project became mired in U.S. political infighting and opposition from environmental groups. In January, the Obama Administration denied the project its necessary State Department permit, forcing it to re-apply for approval.

Although TransCanada now has Obama's blessing to move forward on building the line's southern Cushing-to-Houston leg, it may have to wait until after the November presidential election to start work on the cross-border portion of the line, which it now hopes to complete only by 2015.

"There seems to be increasing support for the project in the U.S.," said Paul Lechem, an analyst at CIBC World Markets. "We'll see if it gets built on schedule, but it seems that things are starting to line up a little bit better there."

Efforts to shift more oil to its Western ports -- alleviating capacity fears and also reducing producers' total dependence on the U.S. market -- also face fierce resistance from environmentalists and aboriginal groups.

Regulators have extended lengthy public hearings into Enbridge's 525,000 bpd Northern Gateway project due to the volume of complaints, while Kinder Morgan has yet to apply for regulatory approvals for plans to double the size of its existing 300,000 bpd Trans Mountain pipeline.

IS THERE DEMAND?

A larger question also looms: Will U.S. refiners be willing to buy all this thick, sulphurous crude?

BP Plc is modernizing its 405,000 bpd refinery at Whiting, Indiana, in order to boost its use of heavy Canadian crudes as a feedstock, while Marathon Petroleum Corp's Michigan plant is in the midst of an overhaul to boost heavy crude intake by 13 percent to 120,000 bpd.

Beyond that, however, plans are limited. So instead, many want to move into new markets like the refining cluster on the U.S. gulf coast, the end point of Keystone XL and the Seaway pipeline that Enbridge and Enterprise Product Partners are reversing and expanding.

"We have capacity on our system but we can't use all of it today because there aren't downstream markets for all of it," says Enbridge's Yu. "By the end of this year we may have spare capacity but we won't have markets for it."

I-N-S-P-I-R-E: Seven Secrets for Success in Selling Devotionals ...

Most writers have discovered there isn?t a lack of talent in our field today, but sometimes there seems to be a lack of inspiration. Throughout the stresses of life, who among us can?t use more nourishing soul food? This is a great day to be a writer and good news for those of us who love to write inspirational pieces. According to my research, there are hundreds of opportunities for devotional writers. A single piece doesn?t pay much, but the savvy writer realizes the financial potential of inspirational writing tucked in with regular writing assignments.

Here is a simple acrostic to help you increase your sales as a devotional writer.

I-N-S-P-I-R-E

??????????? I?Investigate writers guidelines before submitting to these markets. You will have a better chance to sell your pieces if you follow their instructions.

N?Never give up. Keep writing from the Father?s heart. When you do, people will stop and take notice. Of course, you must sit often on the Father?s lap to write from His heart. Don?t neglect time with Him.

S?Submit often. You can?t be published if you aren?t submitting material on a regular basis. Set realistic goals and submit something every month.

P?Pray about your writing and proofread your material carefully. Send your best material. Remember you are representing the King. Ask Him to help you write in a way that leaves eternal footprints in the souls of your readers.

I?Identify your audience. If you are writing a devotional about raising children as a single mom, don?t submit it to a senior citizens magazine. Know who you are writing for.

R?Rally the troops. Attend writing workshops. Take creative writing classes. Hone your skills and get to know other writers. Keep those creative juices flowing. Many times God places writers together to write for Him. Don?t be too proud to let other writers speak into your life. Leave your ego at the door. The best stories aren?t written. They are rewritten.

E?Expect your devotionals to find a home. Don?t be discouraged by rejection slips. If your material is well written and you?ve done your homework, publishers will take notice. Be patient. It may take time, but eventually all your pieces will find a home if you are diligent and follow these helpful hints.

Above all, stay inspired. To be an inspirational writer, you must be oozing with creativity. The best devotional authors discover God in everyday life.

Scalloped hammerhead shark has a new twin

Scientists recently confirmed that endangered scalloped hammerhead sharks have a fishy twin ? a newfound species, still unnamed, that is distinct, yet very closely resembles the threatened sharks.

The case of mistaken identity indicates that scalloped hammerhead sharks are even more scarce than once thought, according to some researchers.

Since it's very hard to tell the two species apart ? only differences in their DNA and number of vertebrae reveal their true identities ? it's likely that previous assessments of scalloped hammerhead sharks exaggerated their numbers because the counts likely included the look-alike sharks.

"It's a classic case of long-standing species misidentification that not only casts further uncertainty on the status of the real scalloped hammerhead, but also raises concerns about the population status of this new species," Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center professor Mahmood Shivji said in a statement.

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Jurors show a characteristic pattern of brain activity when they decide to be lenient on a criminal, and the strength of that pattern can vary from juror to juror, researchers say.

    4. Ancient stone monolith likely marked seasons

Shivji's team at the Florida university first discovered the new hammerhead species in 2005 when examining the DNA of sharks thought to be scalloped hammerheads based on their physical appearance. A research team from the University of South Carolina independently confirmed the existence of the new species in 2006.

Combined genetic assessments from both institutions show that at least 7 percent of the sharks in U.S. waters originally thought to be scalloped hammerheads turned out to be the newly identified species.?

Now, researchers have found the unnamed shark, a so-called "cryptic" species, swimming in waters off the coast of Brazil, thousands of miles from where the species was initially discovered. The find indicates the cryptic species is widespread, and may be facing similar pressure as its nearly identical cousin.

Shark populations around the world have declined precipitously in recent decades, with millions of the iconic fish falling victim to the grisly practice of finning.

Shark fins fetch a high price in China, where they are used for shark fin soup.

Shark finning is largely banned in the United States, and many individual states have banned the trade and possession of shark fins. However, evidence from around the world indicates that finning continues to claim millions of shark lives each year.

MIT's 3D solar cells take cubism to new energy efficient heights

Image
The promise of free energy is an enticing one -- that's free as in renewable source, not cost. (This is capitalism, after all, someone's got to foot the bill.) Economic gripes aside, research outfits like M.I.T. are getting us one step closer to this cleaner fuel future with the creation of three dimensional photovoltaic cells. The team's findings, recently published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science, demonstrate how these computer-modeled structures, rising upward in an unfolded accordion shape, have been proven to increase their energy yield over contemporary flat panels by up to 20 times in field and theoretical testing. This capacity gain, made possible by an efficient harvesting of sunlight during less optimal hours of the day, could be especially helpful in powering regions prone to overcast or wintry climates. The tech is still far from consumer friendly, though, with the actual price of the associated juice exceeding that of traditional solar tech. With continued improvements to the manufacturing process, however, residential and business customers could very well look forward to a future outfitted with solar towers only a Cubist could love.

(AP) ? A Vermont snow plow driver and his wife have pleaded not guilty to second degree murder charges in connection with the strangling of a prep school teacher whose 2-year-old son was found in his mother's idling car on a remote back road.

Thirty-year-old Allen Prue and his 33-year-old wife Patricia Prue, of Waterford, appeared separately in court in St. Johnsbury on Wednesday where they were ordered held without bail for their roles in the death of Melissa Jenkins.

Police say the Prues were arrested early Wednesday after a two-day investigation into Jenkins' death.

Following the Wednesday court appearance, Allen Prue's mother, Donna Prue, says her son has never been in trouble with the law before and she has faith he didn't commit the crime.

Obese youths with particular genetic variants may be more prone to fatty liver disease, a leading cause of chronic liver disease in children and adolescents in industrialized countries, according to new findings by Yale School of Medicine researchers.

The study, which focused on three ethnic groups, is published in the March issue of the journal Hepatology.

Led by Nicola Santoro, M.D., associate research scientist in the Department of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, the authors measured the hepatic, or liver, fat content of children using magnetic resonance imaging. The study included 181 Caucasian, 139 African-American and 135 Hispanic children who were, on average, age 13.

"We observed that a common genetic variant known as Patatin-like phospholipase domain containing protein-3 (PNPLA3) working with a regulatory protein called glucokinase (GCKR), was associated with increased triglycerides, very low-density lipoproteins levels, and fatty liver," said Santoro.

Santoro explained that his observations could help unravel the genetic mechanisms that contribute to liver fat metabolism. "This may drive the decisions about future drug targets to treat hypertriglyceridemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease," he said.

Childhood obesity is a global health concern. Experts say nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is now the leading cause of chronic liver disease in children and adolescents in industrialized countries.

"Our findings confirm that obese youths with genetic variants in the GCKR and PNPLA3 genes may be more susceptible to fatty liver disease," said Santoro, who is cautious about automatically extending this observation to the overall population.

"Our data refer to a population of obese children and adolescents," he said. "I think that further studies in a larger sample size involving lean subjects and adults may help to further define in more details these associations."

Other authors on the study included Clarence K. Zhang, Hongyu Zhao, Andrew J. Pakstis, Grace Kim, Romy Kursawe, Daniel J. Dykas, Allen E. Bale, Cosimo Giannini, Bridget Pierpont, Melissa M. Shaw, Leif Groop, and Sonia Caprio.

The work was also funded, in part, by the Yale Clinical and Translational Science Award grant from the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health.

Photos of asteroid Vesta reveal bright, ancient rock and dark, melted stone

The new photos of Vesta from NASA's Dawn spacecraft highlight odd, shiny spots that are nearly twice as bright as other parts of the asteroid ? suggesting it is original material left over from the space rock's birth 4 billion years ago, NASA officials said today.

A NASA spacecraft orbiting the huge asteroid Vesta has snapped amazing new photos of the colossal space rock, images that reveal strange features never-before-seen on an asteroid, scientists say.

The?new photos of Vesta?from NASA's Dawn spacecraft highlight odd, shiny spots that are nearly twice as bright as other parts of the asteroid ? suggesting it is original material left over from the space rock's birth 4 billion years ago, NASA officials said today (March 21).

With a width of about 330 miles (530 km),?asteroid Vesta?is one of the largest and brightest objects in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. NASA's Dawn probe has been orbiting Vesta since 2011 to study the space rock in unprecedented detail.

"Our analysis finds this bright material originates from Vesta and has undergone little change since the formation of Vesta over 4 billion years ago," said Jian-Yang Li, a Dawn participating scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park, in a statement. "We're eager to learn more about what minerals make up this material and how the present Vesta surface came to be."

Asteroid Vesta unveiled

Li and his colleagues unveiled Dawn's new views of Vesta today at the 43rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.

The photos show surprisingly bright spots all over Vesta, with the most predominant ones located inside or around the asteroid's many craters. The bright areas range from large spots (around several hundred feet across) to simply huge, with some stretching across 10 miles (16 kilometers) of terrain. [Video: Vesta ? Asteroid or Dwarf Planet?]

"Dawn's ambitious exploration of Vesta has been going beautifully," said Marc Rayman, Dawn chief engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., which oversees the mission. "As we continue to gather a bounty of data, it is thrilling to reveal fascinating alien landscapes."?

Dawn mission scientists suspect the bright patches on Vesta were exposed during violent collisions with other space rocks. These impacts may have spread the bright material across the asteroid and mixed it together with darker material onVesta's surface, researchers said.

Astronomers have known about variations in Vesta's brightness for some time. Photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope before Dawn arrived at the asteroid also revealed the bright patches.

Never-before seen asteroid melt

But only the close-up photos from the Dawn probe have revealed the surprising variety of dark blotches on Vesta, which appear as dark gray, brown or reddish blemishes, NASA officials said.

In some views, these darker spots are small deposits near impact craters, while in other photos they appear in larger concentrations. These darker spots on Vesta may also be the result of collisions on the?asteroid, researchers said.

Slow carbon-rich asteroids may have created some of the smaller dark material deposits without carving out a big crater. Meanwhile, faster objects may have potentially slammed into Vesta so hard they melted the big asteroid's crust, which could have also created the dark spots.

"Some of these past collisions were so intense they melted the surface," said Brett Denevi, a Dawn participating scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. "Dawn's ability to image the melt marks a unique find. Melting events like these were suspected, but never before seen on an asteroid."

NASA launched the $466 million?Dawn spacecraft?in 2007 and Vesta is only the first stop of the spacecraft's two-asteroid tour. Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and is expected to spend about a year there before heading off to its next target ? the even larger asteroid Ceres, which is also classified as a dwarf planet.

Dawn is expected to arrive at Ceres in February 2015.

OUPblog ? Blog Archive ? Do baby-boomers care?

By Nancy Guberman

Do baby-boomers see care as a normal, natural extension of family obligations? A recent study in Quebec, Canada reveals that if baby-boomers in that province do consider care a family responsibility, they have a much more limited understanding of what this care entails than their predecessors and the state.

Indeed, in a context where governments are expecting more and more from family caregivers, baby-boomer caregivers are telling researchers that they have a new concept of care. From their point of view, family members should be responsible for offering emotional and moral support, and accompanying the disabled or ill family member to appointments. In contrast, they believe that hands-on physical and nursing tasks (bathing, feeding, giving injections, etc.) should be assumed by home care services or assisted living residences.

These findings come from a study we undertook (?Baby Boom Caregivers: Care in the Age of Individualization?) to answer practitioners? questions concerning the changing portrait of family caregivers they work with. Practitioners were under the impression that this new generation of caregivers was much more occupied and preoccupied with employment and other activities than its predecessors and more demanding of services. Practitioners wondered how to continue meeting the needs of caregivers that appeared to be different from those of previous generations.

To better understand the realities of this generation of caregivers, we met with thirty-nine caregivers (31 women and 8 men) born between 1945 and 1959 to talk about their caregiving experience and their relationship to the baby-boom generation.

Caregiver backgrounds in this study.

Unlike their mothers? cohort for whom caregiving would have represented their principal occupation (taking care of their husband, children, grandchildren, or parents), baby-boomers who care for a relative have many more central occupations in their lives than just caring. Indeed, a large majority of baby-boom women work outside the home as well as having other commitments. Thus, the baby-boom caregivers we met with were trying to maintain multiple identities such as volunteer, activist, friend or spouse. Their caregiver identity was only one amongst many social identities and they refused to define themselves only through their role as a caregiver.

The baby-boomers in our study appear to have a new conception of care whereby the documented, negative consequences of caregiving such as poor mental and physical health, sacrificed personal and family life, or impacts on employment, are no longer considered legitimate. This conception seems to have arisen in parallel with changing notions of family solidarity. Norms of solidarity are becoming less prescriptive, leaving room for an interpretation of family obligations that increasingly depend on many factors. These include the types of interpersonal relationships one has with the person requiring care, one?s availability to care, one?s family?s situation, and so on. In other words, you are only legitimately expected to care if you have a good relationship with the person needing care and if you have no conflicting commitments that take precedence over caring.

Additionally, many of our respondents spoke about the restrictions they put on the caregiving they do offer, particularly concerning the tasks they are willing to assume and the frequency of their help. Most were also very reluctant to take on hands-on care, partly because this on-going, often daily and even hourly caregiving would make it difficult to maintain their current lifestyles, fulfill their multiple commitments, and also because they feel that much of the hands-on assistance is specialized care-giving that requires trained and qualified workers. They are thus very open to delegating much of the caregiving, particularly the hands-on tasks, to service providers. A respondent elaborated on this reasoning.

?She wanted to have more visits, but technically it?s not possible because we all live far away. I finish working at 5 pm, say. Getting out to her residence, I wouldn?t arrive until 6 pm. I?m tired at the end of the day. I barely have enough energy to make supper. It?s the same for my sister; she has her kids? soccer practices, lessons for this and that. So? our lives are organized in ways that don?t include her. I hear myself talking and I feel like a real baby-boomer! Very self-centered, but that?s the way it is??

So although baby-boomers, at least those we met, don?t abdicate their responsibility to their ill and disabled family members, for most caregiving is not their only or even their dominant identity. They are actively trying to maintain multiple identities, leading to what we call the ?denaturalization? of caregiving. Notably, the women we met with call themselves ?caregivers? and not simply wives, daughters or mothers, indicating that the work of caregiving no longer falls within the realm of ?normal? family responsibilities.

Nancy Guberman recently retired from her position as professor of Social Work at the University of Quebec in Montreal and as scientific director of the Center of Research and Expertise in Social Gerontology. She has studied and written extensively about family caregiving and long-term care policies and practices. Incontinence 20 years after child birth three times more common after vaginal delivery

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2012) ? Women are nearly three times more likely to experience urinary incontinence for more than 10 years following a vaginal delivery rather than a caesarean section, finds new research at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition affecting adult women of all ages and can have a negative influence on quality of life.

This new study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden looked at the prevalence and risk factors for UI 20 years after vaginal delivery (VD) or caesarean section (CS). The study included women who had only one child and assessed their prevalence of UI for less than five years, between 5-10 years and for more than 10 years.

Over six thousand women involved

The SWEPOP (Swedish pregnancy, obesity and pelvic floor) study was conducted in 2008 and data were obtained from the Medical Birth Register (MBR) for deliveries between 1985 and 1988. A questionnaire was sent to women and 6, 148 completed it answering questions on height, weight, urinary or anal incontinence, genital prolapse, menstrual status, hysterectomy, the menopause and hormone treatment.

Prevalence of incontinence tripled

Overall, the prevalence of UI was considerably higher after a vaginal delivery (40.3%) compared to women who delivered by caesarean section (28.8%).

The study also found that the prevalence of UI for more than 10 years almost tripled after VD (10.1%) compared to women who had a CS (3.9%).

Overweight also a risk factor

In addition, the paper looks at the impact of BMI on UI. The risk increase of UI in obese women more than doubled in comparison to women with a normal BMI after VD and more than tripled after CS.

Many risk factors

Maria Gyhagen, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and co-author of the paper said:

"In conclusion, the risk of developing urinary incontinence was higher 20 years after a vaginal delivery compared to a caesarean section.

"There are many factors affecting urinary incontinence but obesity and aging as well as obstetric trauma during childbirth are known to be three of the most important risk factors."

Affects daily life

BJOG Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Pierre Martin-Hirsch, added: "Urinary incontinence affects many women and can have a big impact on day to day life.

"However, women need to look at all the information when deciding on mode of delivery as despite vaginal delivery and BMI being linked to urinary incontinence, caesarean section involves its own risks."
