The pioneering astronaut, who relished privacy as much as she did adventure, chose an appropriately discreet manner of coming out. At the end of an obituary that she co-wrote with her partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, they disclosed to the world their relationship of 27 years. As details trickled out after Ride's death on Monday, July 23, 2012, it became clear that a circle of family, friends and co-workers had long known of the same-sex relationship and embraced it. For many millions of others, who admired Ride as the first American woman in space, it was a revelation - and it sparked a spirited discussion about privacy vs. public candor in regard to sexual orientation. NEW YORK (AP) ? An authorized biography of astronaut Sally Ride, written by longtime ABC correspondent Lynn Sherr, is scheduled for publication next year.

Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that Sherr's book, currently untitled, will have the cooperation of Ride's family and of her partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy. Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died of cancer last week at age 61.

The book will offer an extensive look at the professional and personal life of Ride, whose relationship with O'Shaughnessy was not widely known until her death. According to Simon & Schuster, Sherr will have "exclusive access" to Ride's family, and also will speak with friends, colleagues and NASA officials. Sherr reported on the space shuttle program for ABC news in the 1980s and became friendly with Ride.

Auto-Responders For Internet Marketers - blog*spot

If youre engaged in internet marketing right now and youre not using auto-responders, youre missing out on the lions share of cash. If youre arent capturing leads you will never get a chance to build a relationship, you wont get a chance to continuously market to people on your list, and your conversion rates drop off a cliff.

Hopefully thats enough to get all of you affiliate marketers that are not using lead capture forms to invest in this mighty sales and conversion increasing tool. If you dont, honestly, youre probably just not going to make it. All the pros know about building lists and they do it every day in every vertical. Their conversions rock and they capture and market to enormous lists of raving fans.

Email marketing increases conversions up to ten times over simply trying to get somebody to click through to your order form and purchase. Why? Because with repeated emails you can warm up a prospect, hit their hot buttons; show them the value of your product, and more. People that find your website and click away without opting-in to get your free report or newsletter will most likely never return to your site, and youve lost a golden opportunity to make a sale with them and to make all future sales as well.

The big guys know that the money is in the list. Sending a prospect to a cold landing page and expecting them to make a decision to purchase right away just isnt going to work most of the time, in fact a 1 percent conversion rate with this tactic is about the best to hope for. Many times folks are just surfing, they are not in purchasing mode, our job is to get them into purchasing mode and then send them to the sales page.

Investing in a tool like Aweber or similar email marketing tool is essential for your business, in order to capture leads, create email marketing campaigns, and increase your bottom line dramatically. It doesnt matter if you have a small list or a large one, if you treat your list right and provide them with great insights and information, they will buy from you. Over and over again.

For an abundance of other tools and strategies you can use and implement immediately to recruit more distributors with less effort, build your list and drive more traffic to your website, visit where you can also get a 7 part training series on how to successfully increase your profits on the internet.

I'm 67. Can I withdraw Roth IRA earnings early? - The Help Desk ...

I know that withdrawals on earnings in a Roth IRA are non-taxable once the IRA is over five years old. If I fund a Roth IRA now, do I still need to wait five years before earnings withdrawals are tax-free, since I am 67 and already at retirement age? ? Dan B.

Although 59 ? is?the age after which most people can withdraw Roth IRA earnings tax-free, no matter what your age, you must wait five years after opening a Roth to avoid those taxes. "Putting money in a Roth basically assumes you won't need that money for five years," says Keith Amburgey, a CFA and principal of Rutherford Asset Planning in Tampa, Fla. You can withdraw regular contributions (not conversions from a traditional IRA) at any time ? just not the earnings on those contributions.

If you expect to need ready access to all your money, you may be better off contributing those funds to a traditional IRA, says Amburgey. But if you can afford to wait the five years, the Roth is a great choice. Reason: Unlike traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs aren't subject to required minimum distributions at age 70 ?. You'll no longer be able to contribute to the Roth past that age, but your assets can continue to grow tax-free for as long as you want ? even if you decide to pass those assets to your heirs.

Jackson move to Mayo could point to complications

FILE - In this Oct. 16, 2011 file photo, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., D-Ill., is seen during the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington. When Jackson disappeared on a mysterious medical leave in June 2012, it took weeks for anyone in Washington to notice. Jackson has never lived up to the high expectations on the national stage. But none of that seems to matter in his district, where he?s brought home close to $1 billion in earmarks and other funding and won every election since 1995 in a landslide, despite nagging ethical questions over links to imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The dual roles could help explain why the Democrat has given so few details of his medical leave. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak, File)

Rod Blagojevich. The dual roles could help explain why the Democrat has given so few details of his medical leave. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak, File)

(AP) ? Jesse Jackson Jr.'s transfer to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota could indicate a complicating physical illness arose during the Illinois congressman's treatment for depression, several experts in psychiatric care said Saturday.

The Chicago Democrat has been on a secretive leave of absence for nearly seven weeks, during which his office has released only occasional snippets of information, including that he was undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed location.

On Friday, the Mayo Clinic distributed a statement from the congressman that said he had been transferred there for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues." The clinic would not release more information Saturday.

John Anderson, of the Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology in southeastern Minnesota, said people receiving psychiatric care are often transferred to the Mayo Clinic when a physical illness develops because both can be treated there.

"Mayo does an excellent job in terms of combining those, so they can treat what's essentially a dual diagnosis," he said.

He noted specifically that Mayo Clinic has a highly rated gastrointestinal department as well as a free-standing inpatient psychiatric unit.

Jackson underwent a procedure in 2004 to help him lose weight that involves removing part of the stomach and rearranging the intestine. Phone messages left Saturday for Jackson's spokesman weren't immediately returned.

Friday's statement was the first to mention a gastrointestinal illness, and it was not known whether that was related to his depression or an entirely separate medical issue.

The statement did not disclose where the longtime Chicago congressman, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, had been staying previously.

He went on leave June 10, though his office didn't disclose it until weeks later and has been mum on details ever since. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. But his staff later said Jackson's condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment. They also said Jackson has been grappling with emotional issues.

Under mounting pressure from his colleagues and constituents, his office released a statement last month from his unnamed doctor saying Jackson was receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for "a mood disorder."

The timing of his medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich is serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption.

Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Jackson faces Republican and independent candidates in November, though he's widely expected to win re-election. He first won office in a 1995 special election and has easily won each race since. His district includes parts of Chicago and some suburbs.

Weight Control Can Cut Women's Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Weight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Hispanics and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; blacks were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

"Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes," primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. "A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women."

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn't produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

The Daily Duranie: 'Cos Now We're Online

As I am sure you all know, today is the day Duran Duran plays at the Olympics. While some lucky fans are getting ready to go see them perform live, others are going to be glued to their computers to hear the audio streamed via Absolute Radio. Some might be waiting to see if any/all clips show up on youtube. I will probably be in the later camp as I'm leaving in a bit to go to Minneapolis for the weekend to visit a friend and will be in the car at the time the band performs. Nonetheless, whatever I find or hear, I'll do my best to report here tomorrow. Until then, I wanted to comment on a short clip with Nick and Roger that Duran's Facebook posted yesterday, which you can find here.

The focused on the positives and negatives of internet for the music business. Nick explained about how Duran embraced the internet by having one of the first websites (back in 1997) and that they are able to connect with their audience. No arguments there. Then, he went on to talk about how online piracy was an "enormous problem" for the music industry, especially young artists who need the "investment" to be able to continue to make music. This caught my attention. Now, I openly admit that I know nothing about how much artists get for selling copies of albums or songs. I don't. Yet, I wonder how much this pattern of make an album, release an album, tour to get people to buy the album in order to make another album still applies. It feels to me that this isn't the pattern anymore. Even Simon said recently in an interview that things have shifted for Duran. They now make an album to tour as oppose to touring to make an album. My point here is that I suspect that touring is where the money really comes from these days. I know that John has said on more than one occasion that nothing can replace the live show and I completely agree with that. Thus, it isn't as important to sell copies of songs and/or albums.

Of course, I'm not saying that people shouldn't buy official material. Yet, I understand the urge, especially when young to get a song or album that you can't get out of your head. I recorded many songs on those good old cassette tapes back in my childhood because I just HAD to have it. I will also admit that I borrowed records from places like the library and recorded those onto those trusty cassette tapes. I also recorded music from and for my friends. Everyone did. I'm sure Nick would point out to me that the quality was lacking with copies off the radio or on cassette tapes. That's true, but many people would argue the same is true with downloads and mp3s. It just seems to me that in this day and age, everything, including music, is immediate. Kids don't have to wait until the song comes on the radio or MTV to hear it again. They can go on youtube and hear it instantly. Patience for music is one thing they lack because they have never needed it. I might think something has been lost because of it, but we aren't going to change this. We aren't. Thus, instead of fighting it, why not focus on things that can't be instantly possessed and cheaply gotten? Why not encourage those young artists to perfect their live performance? Why not offer products that are not available to download? I think it is time to be more creative rather than just complain about it. There are so many products Duran could do that people would love to buy. They could be leaders showing the young bands how to make enough money to keep going and isn't that what being a rock star is all about?

Croon Audio's Original Bluetooth speakers promise not to creak while they're cranked

Odds are that we've all had a speaker system which can't take the heat: turn up the volume and there's an unintentional dubstep remix as the waaahs and wubwubs of distortion and vibration overtake whatever we actually meant to hear. Croon Audio is only just getting into speakers, but its Original system makes clean sound the order of the day: along with the retro, anti-distortion fiberboard design, the Bluetooth audio box has isolation cones at the corners that Croon hopes will leave any shake, rattle and rolling to Big Joe Turner and Bill Haley. That's good news for a small enclosure with two 15W drivers and a Class D amp inside. A 3.5mm jack still exists if wireless audio compression gets on the nerves as well. The speakers are already selling now in a classic black for $200, although $230 will net a slightly livelier gray or white, and $235 lands an attention-getting (if limited edition) red.

'Dancing' producer: 'I wonder about' Bristol

Fred Prouser / Reuters

Bristol Palin will once again be "Dancing" this fall.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Say the name Bristol Palin, and you'll usually get a strong reaction. This was certainly the case on Friday when ABC revealed that the reality TV personality would be participating in "Dancing With the Stars: All Stars" this fall.?

"It's called All STARs! How exactly is Bristol a STAR? Or a dancer?" wrote reader Kelly Chapman on our Facebook page.

"Palin has to be the biggest joke ever! You mean there wasn't one other person out of over 100 dancers you could choose from?" commented Michele Moran McDevitt.

You get the idea.?

With such reactions in mind, we caught up with "Dancing With the Stars" producer Deena Katz and asked her whether the young Palin will be just as polarizing in her second go-round on the hit show.

"I don't know. I wonder about her," Katz told TODAY.com. "I wonder about everyone. These guys were the charm of their season. ... Do they all have the effect they have before? It's not just Bristol. It's all of them. I'm so curious to see how the audience votes because all of these people were the sparkle of their season."

Though the producer may wonder about Bristol and others, she's quite "thrilled" with the cast the show landed for "All Stars." "It's like I have 160 kids," Katz said. "We had so many great people and it was hard because we only had 12 slots."

Though Bristol is filling one of those 12 spots, another of "Dancing's" most polarizing contestants -- season 10's Kate Gosselin -- is not. But that doesn't mean fans of the reality TV mom won't be seeing her on the ballroom bash. Katz hinted that it's quite possible?the mom of eight would be back in some way.

"I'm hoping that we can bring a lot of people back for packages," she said. "People like that you do want to see. My hope is we can do that."

Do you think Bristol will perform better this time around? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Colorado shooting victim's wife has baby, seven victims still critical

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - A 21-year-old woman who escaped injury in the Colorado theater shooting rampage gave birth to a baby boy on Tuesday while her husband was in the same hospital in a medically induced coma with a gunshot wound to the head.

Katie Medley and her husband, Caleb, both wearing Batman apparel, were at a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora when a gunman clad in tactical body armor, helmet and gas mask opened fire during a midnight showing early on Friday. Twelve people, including a 6-year-old girl, were killed and 58 wounded.

Twenty people remained hospitalized on Tuesday. Seven were in critical condition and two in serious condition.

James Eagan Holmes, 24, was arrested behind the theater shortly after the massacre and was in court for the first time on Monday, appearing dazed and sleepy. At the hearing, the judge set a date of next Monday for formal charges to be filed.

The judge ruled on Tuesday that no cameras would be allowed in the courtroom when Holmes is charged. Holmes' initial appearance on Monday was televised.

The shooting rampage has renewed debate in the United States about gun control. At the same time, Colorado authorities said on Tuesday that applications in the state for background checks to purchase firearms surged in the aftermath of the shooting.

Caleb Medley, a 23-year-old aspiring comedian, was listed in critical condition on Tuesday at University of Colorado Denver Hospital. A website set up to raise money for his care because the Medleys have no health insurance, www.calebmedley.com/help, said he had lost his right eye, suffered brain damage and was in a medically induced coma.

Katie Medley gave birth in the same hospital where her husband was being treated.

A spokeswoman for the hospital relayed the following statement from the Medleys: "The family is excited to say that Hugo Jackson Medley was born at 7:11 (a.m. Mountain Time, 1311 GMT) this morning. Both mom and baby are doing great."

'HIS PULSE WENT UP'

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday evening, Caleb Medley's friend Michael West said Medley had made small improvements and appeared to react when his wife and newborn son came into his hospital room.

"Katie brought the baby into the room and Caleb's blood pressure went up," West said. "She put the baby near his arms and his pulse went up."

Medley's 21-year-old brother, Seth, added that the wounded man had also moved his right hand slightly in the direction of the baby.

Seth Medley said his brother, who lost his right eye to a bullet, had "serious injuries" to his face.

Actor Christian Bale, who stars in the Batman films, visited the Medical Center of Aurora on Tuesday to meet some of the shooting victims, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Authorities have not offered a motive for the shooting spree. Police said Holmes, a former neuroscience student, left his 800-square-foot (75-square-meter) apartment booby-trapped with explosives that authorities said could have destroyed the entire complex.

Local and state bomb experts conducted a controlled demolition over the weekend. The building remains closed and police have not said when residents will be allowed to return.

Holmes is in solitary confinement to protect him from other prisoners. He had recently sought to leave a doctoral degree program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical School, a few blocks from his apartment.

Cable news programs aired lively debates about the high rate of gun ownership in the United States, where the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms.

WASHINGTON RELUCTANT TO WADE INTO ISSUE

But in Washington, there appeared to be little appetite for the contentious issue.

"I think the widespread view is that somebody who is that unbalanced will find some way to do harm," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said. "And we have many areas of the country that have very strict gun control laws and it seems not to have had any impact on the incidences that are in question."

"So I don't sense any movement among either Democrats or Republicans in the direction of thinking that stricter gun control laws would likely have prevented this horrible occurrence in Colorado," McConnell said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said it was too soon following the tragedy to have the discussion.

"I think we should just wait for a reasonable period of time before people are off making statements about what they should do and what they shouldn't do," said Reid, a Democrat.

Asked by reporters about his personal stance on limiting large-capacity ammunition magazines, a type of which was used in the Colorado shooting, Reid showed irritation with the question, responding, "You guys, I'm not going to be here with each of you debating gun control."

President Barack Obama, who traveled to Colorado on Sunday to comfort family members and victims, could speak about the gun control issue more broadly, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Tuesday, declining to offer details or a time frame.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said that in the three days following the rampage, 2,887 people were approved for gun purchases, compared with 2,012 the weekend before, a 43.5 percent increase.

Brandon Baker, owner of Rocky Mountain Guns & Ammo in Parker, Colorado, about 15 miles from Aurora, said business had been brisk since the theater shooting.

"Our gun sales have gone up, but we've had more requests for training," said Baker, a certified firearms instructor. "I'm booked up for the next 2 1/2 months."

Stories about the victims continued to emerge. Friends and relatives of U.S. Navy veteran Jonathan Blunk said that he had been killed while shielding his date from the gunfire.

"We were joined at the hip," friend Kyle Dawson said. "Friend almost doesn't even describe the relationship. That guy was my brother."

Over the weekend, "The Dark Knight Rises" took in $160.8 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices, well below pre-opening estimates of a $170 million to $198 million debut, but still a strong number for a film that box-office watchers said felt the impact of Friday's shooting.

The latest issue of a Batman comic series due to hit stores this week was postponed in light of the shooting, DC Entertainment said on Tuesday.

A fundraising drive at givingfirst.org for victims of the shooting had raised nearly $2 million, including donations from Warner Bros, the studio behind the movie.

Colorado's Fox31 television station in Denver reported that Warner Bros. had donated $1 million, citing sources, but a studio spokeswoman would not confirm a specific amount.

Is It A Good Idea To Trade Both Options And Forex? | FinanceCritics

Is It A Good Idea To Trade Both Options And Forex?

Article by Clyde Howell

Forex Trading, also known as FX Trading or by many as the Foreign Currency Exchange, is a financial market where a person can trade national currencies in order to try and make a profit. Perhaps one feels the U.S. Dollar will get stronger compared to the British Pound or the Euro. A strategy can be developed to affect this trade and if the research is correct, a good profit can be made.Options Trading allows you to buy or sell options on large amounts of stock, futures etc. that you feel will either go up or down in price over a certain period of time. As with Forex Trading, you can leverage your buying power to control more stock or futures for instance, than you could have normally. However, there are differences between Forex and Options Trading. Many of the differences are described below.

24 Hour Trading:

An advantage you have with the Forex Currency Trading System (Forex) as compared to Options trading is your ability to trade 24 hours a day, five days a week if you wish. The Forex Market is open longer than any other market. If your goal is to make double digit gains in a market, it is great to have unlimited time each week to make those trades. Whenever some big event happens around the world, you can be one of the first to take advantage of the situation with Forex Trading. You won?t have to wait for a market to open in the morning like you would if you were trading Options. You can trade from your computer instantaneously, all hours of the day and night.

Rapid Trade Execution:

When you use the Forex Currency Trading System, you receive immediate trade executions. There is no delay like there can be in Options or for that matter other markets as well. And your order gets filled at the best possible price instead of guessing which price your order might get filled. Your order certainly won?t ?slip? like it can with Options. In Forex Trading, there is a lot more liquidity to help with ?slippage? than there is in Options Trading. Liquidity:

Forex Trading has the advantage of being more liquid than any other market, including Options Trading. With the average daily volume in the Forex Market reaching close to 2 Trillion, there is no comparison. The liquidity in Foreign Currency Trading (Forex) far surpasses that in the Options Market. This means when it comes time to trade, Forex Trades will be filled much easier than Options trades will. This speed means more potential profit. Couple this with instantaneous trade execution in Forex Trading, and you have the ability to make a lot of trades quickly.

No Commissions:

Forex or FX Trading is Commission Free because it is an inter-bank market which matches buyers with sellers in an instant. There are no middleman brokerage fees as with other markets. There is a spread between the bid and ask price and this is where Forex trading firms make some of their profit. This means you can save money when you trade Forex compared to Options trading where there are commissions since you would be working with a brokerage firm.Greater Leverage:

Online Forex Trading can give you much greater leverage than playing Options. However, with Options, you can also manage putt and call options in a way to greatly increase your leverage. Leverage can be very important when you know what a currency is going to do. You can achieve 200:1 or greater in Forex Trades compared to less typically in Options, but it can be close. This means with Forex, there can be substantially more potential profit if you make the right move.

Limited Risk is Guaranteed:

Since Forex Traders must have position limits, the risk is limited since the online capabilities of the Forex Trading system automatically initiate a margin call when the margin amount is greater than the value of the account in dollars. This keeps a Forex Trader from losing too much if their position goes the other way. It is a good safety feature that is not always available in other financial markets. And the Forex is different than Options in that with Options, you only have a certain period of time to trade before the options expire.

When considering the differences between Forex Trading and Options, just keep in mind your preferred trading style and the type of risk you are willing to take. There are definite advantages to Forex or FX Trading that may allow you to profit greatly if you develop a good system and stay within your trading limits. If you are ready to go, then begin investigating a good Forex firm with whom to open a Foreign Exchange Trading Account.

Collections For Mac Wants To Be A Universal Finder For The Cloud, Starts With Google Drive & Instagram

collections_mac_logoAs much as storing content in the cloud often makes life easier, there is something to be said for native apps that bridge the gap between cloud and desktop. Collections, a new Mac app (OS X 10.7.x+), wants to build what is essentially a "universal Finder for the Mac." The goal of the service is to let you index all your data in the cloud, make it searchable and to provide you with access to a cached copy on your desktop, too. The team isn't quite there yet, though, but after launching its first public beta with support for Google Drive, the company today launched its second beta, which now also supports Instagram.

Global airlines gross $22.6 billion in ancillary revenues

By Rob Lovitt, NBC News contributor

A $10 priority-boarding fee here, a $25 checked-bag fee there; pretty soon, you?re talking real money.

$22.6 billion, in fact. According to the annual Amadeus Review of Ancillary Revenue Results released Monday, that?s how much ancillary revenue 50 airlines around the world reported making in 2011, a 66-percent jump from the $13.5 billion that the 47 airlines that reported such income made in 2009.

However, the 2011 total represents just a 5.3-percent rise from 2010, an increase that suggests that the days of slapping new fees on standard services may be winding down.

?Among the top producers, the growth is slowing because they?re reaching the limit of what can be sold to a customer,? said Jay Sorensen, president of IdeaWorks, who helped produce the report. ?But worldwide, it?s going to keep growing because there are so many carriers that are still not doing the bare minimum.?

For this year?s report, Sorensen looked at the financial filings made by 108 carriers and tallied the non-ticket revenues for the 50 that disclosed them. Those revenues include both ? la carte fees, such as those for checked bags, priority seating and cabin amenities, and the revenues airlines earn through co-branding partnerships with credit card companies.

The top five earners by dollar value last year:

  • United Continental: $5.2 billion
  • Delta: $2.5 billion
  • American: $2.1 billion
  • Qantas: $1.4 billion
  • Southwest: $1.2 billion

Yes, Southwest, despite the fact that airline allows passengers to check two bags for free. In fact, 2011 represented the first year that the carrier cracked the top 10.

According to the report, it did so by earning $142 million through its EarlyBird priority-seating service, $96 million from its Business Select program and an additional $250 million through improvements to its Rapid Rewards co-branded credit card partnership with Visa.?

Less surprising, perhaps, low-cost carriers dominated the results when calculated as a percentage of total revenue. Fee-dependent Spirit topped that list, earning one-third (33.2 percent) of its total revenue via ancillary revenue, followed by UK-based carrier Jet2 (27.1 percent), Allegiant (27 percent), easyJet (20.8 percent) and Ryanair (20.5 percent).

In a way, carriers such as Spirit cut to the heart of the matter. On the one hand, many consumers feel they?re being nickeled and dimed when they have to pay for services that were once considered part of their ticket purchase; on the other, airlines note that so-called ?unbundling? of fares lets travelers pay for only the services they use, which helps keep fares down.

Much of the heat in the debate can be traced to the plethora of fees that began appearing in 2008 and the ham-handed way the airlines introduced them.

?When the more controversial fees ? like first-bag fees ? came out, the airlines were really just fishing for revenue,? said Brett Snyder, aka The Cranky Flier. ?They were flailing and grasping at anything they could.?

But over time and with better disclosure, many fliers have come to the conclusion that unbundling fares also increases choice. If, for example, they choose not to check a bag, they say, why should the costs involved in handling it be rolled into their tickets?

?I love the idea that I can pick or choose what services and amenities I want,? said Snyder, ?but I want those options presented to me early on so there are no surprises down the line.?

Meanwhile, and regardless of where individual travelers stand on the issue, it?s obvious that ancillary revenues have become the lifeblood of the industry, providing billions of dollars in income at a time when high oil prices and economic jitters continue to take a toll on the business.

According to the International Air Transport Association, the global industry posted an estimated net profit of $7.9 billion last year on revenues of $597 billion, a post-tax margin of 1.3 percent. This year, the organization expects net profits to drop to $3 billion or just 0.5 percent of revenues.

Given those pressures and the difficulty of raising fares in tough times, it?s unlikely that the airlines will forgo their ancillary revenues anytime soon. The rate at which those revenues increase may slow ? as noted, many airlines have already snagged the low-hanging fruit of bag fees, change fees, food and beverage, etc. ? but that will simply push some to get more, shall we say, creative.

Related: United-initiated fare hike sticks after competitors join in

Pre-ordering upgraded meals before your flight? KLM is now charging 12 to 15 euros on select flights. Permanent RFID-equipped bag tags that let passengers bypass the lines at the ticket counter? Qantas sells its Q Bag Tag for AUD$50. And Vueling, the Spanish low-cost carrier, will hold the middle seat empty, board you early and provide a drink and a snack for 60 euros, or around $73. No doubt, others are in the works.

?We?ve seen the industry move swiftly to grasp some clear opportunities for providing ancillary?services, such as baggage fees, extra legroom and on-board catering,? said Holger Taubmann, senior vice president of distribution at Amadeus. ?The next wave of innovation in ancillary services will come from those airlines which develop new products that support their brand positioning and deliver value to the traveler by meeting their individual needs and preferences.?

Or, as Sorensen puts it, ?Consumers are beginning to begrudgingly accept this method of airlines? pricing their products. They?re not at the level of embracing it but for consumers who can travel light, don?t care when they board and don?t want to eat on the plane, they?ll find their way to a cheaper fare.?

They can "be a mercenary," muses Capt. John Rodriguez, who'll leave the Army soon after six years.

That's the kind of thinking the government wants to change, both among American employers and members of the armed forces. In fact, the skills troops use in combat can be useful for many types of civilian jobs, but employers often don't understand them and people leaving the military need help with presenting those skills or developing new ones.

Rodriguez was attending a recent resume-writing class, part of the Transition Assistance Program, which is run by the departments of Defense, Labor and Veteran Affairs to help soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines successfully make the transition back to the civilian world.

Some 250,000 service members leave the military each year and all must attend counseling on finances and other issues whether they served six years or 26 years, whether they saw the battlefield or not. Other parts of the 20-year-old transition program have been voluntary, such as the resume writing class and one on how to dress for the civilian workplace.

At the class Rodriguez attended, teacher Aleshia Thomas-Miller offered some tips for writing resumes that might help civilian employers understand what veterans did in Afghanistan and Iraq and how their experience translates to a non-military job:

?Don't use military jargon or an alphabet soup of military acronyms. Even a job isn't called a job in the military, it's called an MOS, or military occupational specialty. That might fly in military circles, but in the civilian world, it's incomprehensible.

"It doesn't matter how qualified you are if the employer does not understand," she told the class of a dozen soldiers.

?If you were a platoon leader, as Rodriguez was in Afghanistan, don't use that term either, Thomas-Miller said. Say you managed 50 people, were responsible for expensive equipment, made decisions in stressful situations.

There's online help as well. At careeronestop.org and Mil2FedJobs.com, troops can type in their military occupation and get a list of related jobs, the states in which they're located and sometimes with a link to apply for the job online, depending on the program.

For instance, an 11C (an Indirect Fire Infantryman who can supervise or serve on a mortar unit), might find one of 180 jobs in Illinois, driving trucks, running company training programs or working in security.

The vast majority of veterans are employed, but the jobless rate for America's new generation of veterans was 9.5 percent last month. That's down from 12.7 percent the previous month and 13.3 percent in June 2011, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said. But it's still been consistently higher than the country at large, with an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent in June, and for vets from all previous wars.

There are hundreds of jobs in the military ? for medics, computer specialists, mechanics, lawyers, finance officers, pilots, electrical engineers, nuclear engineers, food service managers, heavy equipment operators, and more. Though officials provided no data on who has the hardest time finding jobs after military service, many say it's infantrymen and those who held other jobs directly involved in combat that have no direct civilian equivalent.

President Barack Obama on Monday announced a redesign of the transition program. Starting later this year, assistance will begin earlier in a military career, rather than at the end. There will be more one-on-one help, a separate focus for those wanting to go back to school or start their own businesses. Classes will be five to seven days, rather than the current three and more things will be mandatory for most people.

The redesigned program will have a fancier new name ? Transition GPS. The administration is calling it the first major overhaul of a system started in the 1990s post-Cold War drawdown, though it's been updated in recent years to be more youth friendly with web-based information and workshops.

Acknowledging that troops already have some terrific experience, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the revised program will help them "apply their experience to additional training, formal education, and develop successful civilian careers."

A recent study by the Center for New American Security, a Washington think tank, said businesses want to hire new vets because they believe they have leadership qualities, teamwork skills, character, discipline, expertise, effectiveness, and loyalty.

Envisioning how vets might fit into their company is a different matter, said the study, which included interviews with 87 unidentified businessmen representing 69 companies.

"The most prominent obstacle to hiring veterans," it said, is that "both civilians and members of the military have a hard time translating military skills into civilian job qualifications."

Employers also said their fears include concern:

?that troops with post traumatic stress may be "damaged" or have violent tendencies.

?that National Guard and Reserve troops will be called up for duty, leaving the company short-handed.

?that the majority of post-9-11 vets lack the college degrees or industry-specific expertise they'd need for senior positions, yet don't want lower level jobs employers feel are more appropriate for them.

?that vets too often seek jobs that they don't have the education or skills to do.

"There are folks who get it, are coming out of the service and say 'I realize I'm not going to be CEO,'" said Devin B. Holmes, CEO of Warriorgateway.org, a portal to help troops find help with employment, health questions, education and a range of other transition needs.

"There are also folks coming out and (saying) 'I want a GS14 position in the government,'" Holmes said, meaning the second highest level in the "General Schedule" of government pay ? jobs that go to people with a lot of experience and/or a very high level of expertise in their field, and are management positions.

"You can achieve that if you work hard and do a good job ... but you're not going to get it on Day 1," Holmes said.

Officials say privately that part of the disconnect comes from a sense of entitlement among some troops, the feeling that they deserve a great job after doing duty that only a tiny fraction of Americans were willing to do. But Holmes said the larger reason is that troops lack an understanding of what some jobs entail and what experience and education is needed to get them ? a problem he thinks the Transition Assistance Program should work on.
